Suicide: The Ripple Effect movie screening
<p>Suicide: The Ripple Effect chronicles the story of Kevin Hines, who at age 19 attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Since then Kevin has been on a mission to use his story to help others find recovery and stay alive, and he has become a prominent international suicide prevention speaker and advocate. <p><strong>Malvina Hoffman: A Sculptor’s Journey</strong></p><p>August 26, 2017 – August, 2018 </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: 0pt;"><span style='font-family: "Calibri Light",sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;'>Drawing from the CRMA’s deep collection of works by 20<sup>th</sup> century sculptor Malvina Hoffman, this two-gallery exhibition explores her lengthy and varied career as a sculptor of the human form. Hoffman studied with several artists in New York before traveling to Paris in 1910 where she successfully convinced Auguste Rodin to accept her as a student. </span><span lang="EN" style='font-family: "Calibri Light",sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin; mso-ansi-language: EN;'>During their lessons, he advised her "Do not be afraid of realism.”<sup> </sup></span><span style='font-family: "Calibri Light",sans-serif; mso-ascii-theme-font: major-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: major-latin;'> It was from Rodin that Hoffman learned a naturalistic, sometimes rugged approach to the form. Luther College to host Mark Borchardt biology colloquium April 26
<p>Luther College presents a biology colloquium by Mark Borchardt titled "Cows or People? Sources of Fecal Contamination in the Karst-like Aquifer in Northeast Wisconsin" 9:40 a.m., Thursday, April 26, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206 on the Luther campus.</p><p>The colloquium is open to the public with no charge for admission.</p><p>In his lecture, Borchardt will explain how he uses viruses and gut bacteria to determine the source of bacterial contaminants in well water.</p><p>Borchardt is the director of the Laboratory for Infectious Disease and the Environment in Marshfield, Wisconsin. LIDE is an interagency laboratory between USDA-Agriculture Research Service and USGS Wisconsin Water Science Center. LIDE collaborates with researchers around the world to work on problems involving the environmental transmission of disease from human and agricultural sources.</p><p>A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,050, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs. <p>Hospice may be scary for some and may be seen as “giving up.” Presenter, Kris Sargent, sees hospice as living the best possible way one can for whatever time is left and providing a team approach to improving quality of life. "With earlier referral to a hospice program, patients may receive care that results in better management of symptoms, leading to stabilization of their condition and prolonged survival," wrote the authors of the study released by the <a href="http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1000678"><em>New England Journal of Medicine</em></a>. Marion's Good Roads: Bicycles, Motorcycles & Automobiles on the Transcontinental Routes
