Art Exhibit: Formations

Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present Formations, a two-person exhibit of works by Crit Streed and Satomi Kawai, in celebration of the gallery’s 7 year anniversary.

Formations displays artworks by two artists enamored by nature and natural processes with an intuitive penchant towards it’s representation in their work. A ‘form’, the shape and structure of something as distinguished from its material, is constructed in the artworks as parts to become whole. The portrayal of these units is layered within each artist’s distinct aesthetic and their individual depictions of sequence and emotional connection. This exhibit features sizable abstract paper works by Crit Streed and intricate contemporary jewelry and meditational drawings by Satomi Kawai.

Crit and Satomi join the gallery as local artists who exhibit nationally and internationally. Crit is an Emeritus Professor of art at the University of Northern Iowa with an M.F.A from the University of Iowa in Painting. Satomi Kawai is a recent resident artist at Initiation 2018/ Kallichoron in Athens, Greece and holds an M.F.A. in Jewelry and Metal Arts from the University of Iowa.
2018-04-26 17:00:00 -05004/26/1810:00 a.m.Gilded Pear GalleryCedar Rapids -

Ears On A Beatle

Written by Mark St. Germain
Directed by Sean Christopher Lewis
April 13–29, 2018

From the writer of hit Riverside plays Dancing Lessons and Relativity comes the story of Veteran FBI agent Howard Ballantine and new recruit Daniel McClure. It’s 1972 and these men are assigned to job of critical importance by J. Edgar Hoover: get politically outspoken John Lennon out of the country before Richard Nixon runs for reelection. Filled with humor and heartbreak, Ears on a Beatle explores a time when the country was sharply divided by an unpopular war, lies flowed from the White House and individual liberties were threatened in the name of national security! Based on files declassified by the Freedom of Information Act, it’s an incredibly humorous and deeply involving play that is as contemporary as today's headlines.

Artistic Director Sean Lewis says: “A last minute treat for our audience… funny… smart… and based on true events, the play is a rollicking look at the world then and now.”
2018-04-26 21:30:00 -05004/26/187:30 p.m.Riverside TheatreIowa City -

Museum Store Featured Artist of the Month: Marty Mitchell

April – Museum Store Artist of the Month

Marty Mitchell

My work explores questions about how we are acculturated and socialized, and therefore, how we view our environment as we are trained by society. I focus on the sense of autobiography within a landscape context. I explore an idea that our socialization causes us to view that environment in very conditioned ways, gender and role-playing being significant factors. Women have traditionally been trained to experience their surroundings from a limited, or ‘bounded,’ perspective, ie: from the intimacy of home and garden, whereas men have traditionally been encouraged to view the space around them with the panoramic vision of ‘manifest destiny.’ In understanding this, I seek to contrast intimate and easily overlooked spaces with vast, deep spaces, creating opposition in and of view.

Admission to the Museum Store is always free.

Image caption: Winter Walk, by Marty Mitchell
2018-04-27 16:00:00 -05004/27/1812:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Flight Pattern: Birds in Art

Flight Pattern: Birds in Art
March 2018 – March 2019
In flight or at rest, birds have long fascinated artists. Often used as symbolic objects for particular virtues, families, or countries, birds in art can carry meaning far beyond their forms. From John Buck’s vibrant woodcut of the extinct dodo bird to Laurie Hogin’s fantastically feathered creations, Flight Pattern celebrates the great variety of avian art in the CRMA collection.

Image caption:

John Buck, Phoenix Rising, 2006-2007, woodblock print, 50 x 37 inches, museum purchase made possible by the Collectors' Circle, 2009.078.
2018-04-27 16:00:00 -05004/27/1812:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

This exhibition of thirteen seminal works, all drawn from the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, traces the early trajectory of Edward Hopper’s career in works from 1906 to 1933.

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. Best known for capturing what he saw as the solitude and isolation of modern American life, Hopper’s works include austere interiors, moody cityscapes, and starkly beautiful rural landscapes. His art injects the psychological lives of his figures into what otherwise may appear to be straightforward depictions of everyday life. Solitary figures contemplate their existence in these various locales, all highlighted with Hopper’s extraordinarily sensitive use of light.

Image caption:

Edward Hopper, Cobb's Barns and Distant Houses, 1930-1933, oil on canvas, 29 1/8 x 43 1/8 in.
