Grant Wood: From Farm Boy to American Icon offers an expansive look at Wood’s life and career though his art. Museum Store Featured Artist for April: Marty Mitchell

April – Museum Store Artist of the Month

Marty Mitchell

My work explores questions about how we are acculturated and socialized, and therefore, how we view our environment as we are trained by society. I focus on the sense of autobiography within a landscape context. I explore an idea that our socialization causes us to view that environment in very conditioned ways, gender and role-playing being significant factors. Women have traditionally been trained to experience their surroundings from a limited, or ‘bounded,’ perspective, ie: from the intimacy of home and garden, whereas men have traditionally been encouraged to view the space around them with the panoramic vision of ‘manifest destiny.’ In understanding this, I seek to contrast intimate and easily overlooked spaces with vast, deep spaces, creating opposition in and of view.

Admission to the Museum Store is always free.
2018-04-26 20:00:00 -05004/26/1812:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

February 3 - May 20, 2018

Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

This exhibition of thirteen seminal works, all drawn from the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, traces the early trajectory of Edward Hopper’s career in works from 1906 to 1933.

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. Best known for capturing what he saw as the solitude and isolation of modern American life, Hopper’s works include austere interiors, moody cityscapes, and starkly beautiful rural landscapes. His art injects the psychological lives of his figures into what otherwise may appear to be straightforward depictions of everyday life. Solitary figures contemplate their existence in these various locales, all highlighted with Hopper’s extraordinarily sensitive use of light.

Image caption:

Edward Hopper, Cobb's Barns and Distant Houses, 1930-1933, oil on canvas, 29 1/8 x 43 1/8 inches, Josephine N. Dexter Haven, none of whom believe that George is good enough for her. Unfortunately, father Seth’s philandering with a Broadway dancer causes a scandal which an unscrupulous media tycoon threatens to break -- unless he can send a reporter to cover this high society wedding from the inside. Enter Macaulay “Mike” Connor, a writer of quality unwillingly slumming it on the society beat, who holds strong views against the old money-wielding upper class, and his faithful photographer Liz, whose romantic connection is not enough to stop the fascinated dance which ensues when Tracy and Mike meet and spar over class boundaries and champagne-addled declarations. Torn between three men, Tracy must determine whether or not she belongs on a pedestal. Philip Barry’s sparkling comedy The Philadelphia Story is witty, sophisticated romp, a breezy and romantic story which explores family dynamics, class prejudice, and human frailty."

Don't miss this exciting show directed by RHCR's Artistic Director, Kerry Covington.

Seating is limited!
