Art Exhibit: Formations

Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present Formations, a two-person exhibit of works by Crit Streed and Satomi Kawai, in celebration of the gallery’s 7 year anniversary.

Formations displays artworks by two artists enamored by nature and natural processes with an intuitive penchant towards it’s representation in their work. A ‘form’, the shape and structure of something as distinguished from its material, is constructed in the artworks as parts to become whole. The portrayal of these units is layered within each artist’s distinct aesthetic and their individual depictions of sequence and emotional connection. This exhibit features sizable abstract paper works by Crit Streed and intricate contemporary jewelry and meditational drawings by Satomi Kawai.

Crit and Satomi join the gallery as local artists who exhibit nationally and internationally. Crit is an Emeritus Professor of art at the University of Northern Iowa with an M.F.A from the University of Iowa in Painting. Satomi Kawai is a recent resident artist at Initiation 2018/ Kallichoron in Athens, Greece and holds an M.F.A. in Jewelry and Metal Arts from the University of Iowa.
2018-04-25 17:00:00 -05004/25/1810:00 a.m.Gilded Pear GalleryCedar Rapids -

From John Buck’s vibrant woodcut of the extinct dodo bird to Laurie Hogin’s fantastically feathered creations, Flight Pattern celebrates the great variety of avian art in the CRMA collection.

Image caption:

John Buck, Phoenix Rising, 2006-2007, woodblock print, 50 x 37 inches, museum purchase made possible by the Collectors' Circle, 2009.078.
2018-04-25 16:00:00 -05004/25/1812:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

February 3 - May 20, 2018

Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York

This exhibition of thirteen seminal works, all drawn from the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, traces the early trajectory of Edward Hopper’s career in works from 1906 to 1933.

Edward Hopper (1882-1967) was a prominent American realist painter and printmaker. Best known for capturing what he saw as the solitude and isolation of modern American life, Hopper’s works include austere interiors, moody cityscapes, and starkly beautiful rural landscapes. His art injects the psychological lives of his figures into what otherwise may appear to be straightforward depictions of everyday life. Solitary figures contemplate their existence in these various locales, all highlighted with Hopper’s extraordinarily sensitive use of light.

Image caption:

Edward Hopper, Cobb's Barns and Distant Houses, 1930-1933, oil on canvas, 29 1/8 x 43 1/8 inches, Josephine N.
