After living near several amazing city markets around the country, I could not have been more excited about the opening of the NewBo City Market
in the New Bohemia District on Third Street SE on Oct. 27.
Think of each visit as an adventure for your mouth. First, grab a coffee to sip while you start sampling, browsing and buying.
Taste the pepper jelly from Phat Daddy’s. Stop at Pappardelle’s Pasta and pick up some organic or gluten-free pasta, then to Betty & Bobo’s Better Breads for a freshly-baked-before-your-eyes loaf. By the time you’ve tasted the local cheeses from NewBo Cheese Co. and found last minute ingredients for the dinner party that has evolved as you shopped, you are probably hungry.
Sip a smoothie that you will watch whirred and stirred before your eyes or try some Asian street food from Jojo’s, a merchant I have heard nothing but rave reviews about.
On opening day, I snagged one of the last pizzas from the wood-oven pizza guy at Maggie’s Farm Pizza. Within minutes I was presented with a beautiful plate of pizza topped with fresh tomato sauce, charred crust and mouthwatering ingredients. I walked around eating it. The subtle smell of garlic distracted me too much to bother finding a seat. There is, though, plenty of seating in the general atrium area. And, don’t forget to grab a beer or glass of wine from the NewBo Bar to wash down your lunch or dinner.
On your way out, satisfy your sweet tooth with ice cream from one of the market’s youngest entrepreneurs at The Chill. Or grab something for the road, like a cupcake or bag of popcorn. The Monster cupcake at That One Cupcake Place tastes just like cookie dough and will send you into a sugar coma. Or if savory, sweet and a combination of the two is what you are looking for, stop at CR Popcorn Shop for what I imagine is the human equivalent of catnip — a mix of cheddar and caramel corn.
While you were at the market, it’s also possible that you may have been too busy stuffing your face (Oh, is that just me?) to notice the cooking classes going on and musicians performing.
So abandon your notions that the NewBo Market is a craft fair — though seasonal vendors will sell their creations — or will house 50 stalls of tomato vendors — in the summer months there will be a traditional farmers market outside. Instead, the market is a dining destination that satiates onsite or offers ingredients to create in your own kitchen. And with 23 food vendors, every gastro adventure could be entirely different from the first.
