Starlighter’s II Theatre in Anamosa presents Sam Shepard's 1979 Pulitzer Prize-winning family drama, Buried Child. When Vince brings his girlfriend, Shelly, home to meet his family, she is at first charmed by the “normal” looking farm house which she compares to a “Norman Rockwell cover or something”–that’s before she meets his crazy family. Strangely, no one seems to remember Vince at first, and they treat him as an intruder. Eventually, however, they seem to accept him as a part of their violently dysfunctional family. Gradually, the family’s dark secret begins to come clear. Shows are November 2 & 3 at 7:30 p.m.; November 4 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $13/adults, $12/seniors. The Englert Theatre invites you to join them for the Iowa City Song Project Brunch on Saturday, November 3. Come enjoy great music from the Iowa City Song Project and brunch at the Motley Cow Café from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Over the past year, The Englert Theatre commissioned 31 musicians and bands to write and record songs inspired by experiences or impressions of Iowa City. The songs the bulk of them recorded locally were collected into a compilation album called the Iowa City Song Project. The album features a diverse collection of artists tapping into sounds that range from roots-rock traditions to the experimental and avant-garde. This collection of songs, which could never claim to be the final word on a continually growing music community, is nonetheless a colorful snapshot of the scene that has been inspired by this small but vibrant town. The Iowa City Song Project is The Englert Theatre's first commissioned work. The album will be available from Maximum Ames on 2xLP, CD, and digital formats starting November 6. Visit maximumamesrecords.com for album presale details.
