There are 49 live music shows in the area this weekend. We've highlighted a few below and offer a preview of what the music is like.
Among those who value originality, inspiration, eccentricity, and character – as well as talent that hovers somewhere on the outskirts of genius, the story of Paul Thorn is already familiar. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi and raised among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured a young Elvis generations before, Thorn has rambled down back roads and jumped out of airplanes, worked for years in a furniture factory, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Durán on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, opened for Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, and John Prine among many other headliners.
He plays Friday in Iowa City.
Pieta Brown: This Land Is Your Music
Pieta Brown returns with the third installment of her This Land Is Your Music project. This ongoing series is a celebration of the connections between musicians and artists and the land and community that they come from. The third chapter of this series — a one-time event rather than a residency — will feature an evening of music by Pieta and the Pines plus other special guests.
The show is Saturday in Iowa City.
Super Size Seven
From the band website: "Some changes coming for us, we're now being sponsored by Red Stripe beer (Hooray! Beer!) which you will be able to enjoy at most of our shows. You'll see Red Stripe swag at shows and of course a big Red Stripe logo on our tour bus!"
The popular band plays Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
From David Zollo's webiste: "If you're a follower of the midwestern indie music world (or of American roots music generally) you might be forgiven for thinking David Zollo has been around forever. The truth is, it just seems that way."
He plays Saturday in Iowa City.
After meeting on the NYC underground live Hip Hop scene in the early 2000's, Adam and Borahm teamed up to create a genre defying, hybrid musical style that encompasses their favorite aspects of Hip Hop, Glitch, Trip Hop, Drum and Bass, and Dubstep.
