Update: Benz featured the highly sought after beer, Westvletern 12, on Wednesday (12/12) and sold out almost immediately. Matt Hanlin of Benz, said there were over 700 entries into the beer raffle, with inquires coming into the store from across the country. Since the special appearance of the beer was based on a fundraiser from the brewery, beer enthusiasts aren't likely to see the beer in local stores again anytime soon. But, helping out the brewery and and the local food bank made the whirlwind worthwhile. "We were happy to help support a philanthropic cause," said Hanlin. ******************************************************************************************************************* Original post: Benz has received cubes of Westvletern 12. This special cube includes two glasses and six delicious Belgian beers for $85.00. Westvletern 12 will go on sale at Benz Beverage Depot on Wednesday December 12th, (12/12/12) at 3:00 pm. (One cube per customer.) If you would like to guarantee yourself a six pack, please come to Benz with three canned food items in hand in exchange for three Westvleteren 12 raffle tickets. This will be a unique chance to purchase this highly sought after beer in the United States. Beer Advocate rates this as the #2 beer in the world, after holding the # 1 title for many years in a row. This beer is made in Vleteren, Belgium by Trappist monks. As with all other Trappist breweries, the beer is only sold in order to financially support the monastery and other philanthropic causes. While the brewery is a business by definition (its purpose is to make money), it does not exist for pure profit motives, and they do no advertising except for a small sign outside the abbey which indicates the daily availability of each beer. The monks have repeatedly stated that they only brew enough beer to run the monastery, and will make no more than they need to sell, regardless of demand. The need to build a wing on the monastery arose, therefore creating a 'mass' production for world distribution. The monks have been working hard for three years to turn out enough beer to sell around the world to raise enough money to complete their project. So buy for a good cause and amazing taste!
