If you ask Scott Brown to choose a favorite meal of the day, he’s definitely going to say breakfast.
“I’m a breakfast person so all the breakfast items are my favorite and we serve them all day and all night.”
Brown owns and operates Scott’s Family Restaurant, located on Blairsferry Road in Cedar Rapids. The restaurant won this year’s Top Shelf award in two categories: Best Breakfast and Best Family Restaurant, and is known in the area for their breakfast menu.
“In my opinion — and apparently others’ opinions — no one has better breakfast than Scott’s,” Brown said. “All of the products are high quality. For example our hash browns are fresh, not frozen, which makes a huge difference. Also you can typically be in and out in no time. I’ve waited at drive thrus longer than people wait for their freshly prepared breakfast at my restaurant.”
Brown added their weekend breakfast buffet that is second to none with a very affordable $8.99 price tag.
Brown said winning in two Top Shelf categories is a great honor. “It makes me feel good because people don’t just think of us as a breakfast place,” he said. “We also have great lunch and dinner items on our menu. Nothing makes me happier than seeing family members sitting together at the restaurant enjoying their meal and having a good time.”
Before opening his own restaurant, Brown racked up plenty of experience in the industry. “I’ve worked in the restaurant business since I was 16, so for 29 years.” He decided to open Scott’s when the owner of the restaurant previously located in the building (Happy Chef) decided to close. “I had two choices then, go work for someone else or try to start my own restaurant.”
It seems he made the right choice as Scott’s Family Restaurant will celebrate its sixth anniversary on October 1st.
Brown can be seen working in the restaurant six days a week. “I work a long day on Friday because I stay for dinner hour and help with the prime rib and fish fry,” he said. “I spend a majority of my time in the kitchen cooking and try to walk around and check on everyone when I have time. My favorite part about my job is the sense of accomplishment you feel when you feed a large amount of people throughout the day and all the employees did their part to make our guests leave the restaurant happy and full.”
Brown said one of his secrets to success is also treating customers well. “We have a great rewards program which rewards customers for coming in. They get free pie, free sandwiches, free dinners and great discounts for being a loyal customer.”
