Shopkins Live! 'Shop it Up!' Friday, Feb. 16

The Shoppes make their theatrical debut in a new live show featuring musical performances by Jessicake, Bubbleisha, Peppa-Mint, Rainbow Kate, Cocolette, Polli Polish and more. The fashionista are joined by the Shopkins, the grocery store-themed mini collectible toys. All of Shopville is in a tizzy as preparations get underway for the annual Funtastic Food and Fashion Fair, but no event is complete without a few hiccups. Where’s the supersecret celebrity guest? Will Slick Breadstick ever find a dance partner? The action plays out through urban-style music and state-of-art video and scenery.

Black History Month Short Film Fest, Saturday, Feb. 17

After a family story time honoring black culture and history, the Iowa City Public Library will host a Black History Month Short Film Fest. It features several important stories that have been made into animated features, including “Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer,” “Spirit of the Civil Rights Movement,” “Trombone Shorty,” “The Snowy Day” and more. All ages are invited to stop in for one short film or stay for them all; popcorn will be served. The Family Storytime, from 10:30 to 11 a.m., features books about key African-American figures and celebrates the impact of black musicians.

Broadway at the Paramount: 'The Sound of Music' Wednesday, Feb. 21

The hills are alive in this new touring production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “The Sound of Music.” The musical story of Maria and the von Trapp Family, set against the rise of the Nazi regime, is coming to Cedar Rapids as part of the Broadway at the Paramount series. Its Tony-, Grammy- and Academy Award-winning score includes such favorite tunes as “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the iconic title song. More than 44 million people tuned into a live telecast on NBC in December 2013, and 2015 marked the 50th anniversary of the film version, which continues to be the most successful movie musical in history.
