Event Description

Carrie Newcomer has been described as a “prairie mystic” by the Boston Globe, as one who “asks all the right questions” by Rolling Stone, and as “a voice as rich as Godiva chocolate” by the Austin Statesman. One of the definitive voices of the heartland and progressive spirituality, this past fall Carrie released her 14th album, The Beautiful Not Yet. To create the album, Newcomer joined forces with producer and banjo virtuoso Jayme Stone (bringing his Lomax Project to CSPS this spring). It is a collection of joyous, earthy songs featuring elegantly layered chamber arrangements, Newcomer’s signature warm, intimate vocals and filled with the ache and awe of human longing. Many of the songs were created in dialog with popular author Parker J. Palmer. (In July 2013, Carrie and Palmer brought their program “Healing the Heart of Democracy” to First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.) Newcomer has collaborated with artists from Alison Krauss to Nickel Creek to Amjad Ali Khan, and works with a number of humanitarian causes. “To my mind,” says Barbara Kingsolver, author of The Poisonwood Bible, “Carrie Newcomer is much more than a musician. She’s a poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace.”
