Event Description

Backlash Bach

Red Cedar Chamber Music brings Bach’s intricate genius to Eastern Iowa with a virtuoso program guaranteed to bring a fresh perspective to Bach’s greatness. Violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian are joined by guest artist, cellist Isaac Pastor-Chermak to present J.S. Bach’s three magnificent Sonatas for Viola de Gamba and Harpsichord in an exciting new way.

The three sonatas were originally scored for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord Obligato. The Harpsichord part (unlike many Bach wrote), is two fully realized independent lines. In Red Cedar’s brand new arrangement, the right hand of the harpsichord is played by the violin and the left by one of the cellos, while the solo Gamba part is played by the second cello. In essence, we are presenting these incredible three-part inventions with three equal voices.

Red Cedar Chamber Music’s Artistic Director, Carey Bostian has always been fascinated with these incredible works and has been studying them since 1989. This concept if applied to all 12 Sonatas Bach wrote in this style, opens up a myriad of performance possibilities for wind and string players. Nearly any combination of three wind or stringed instruments could present these works as a trio, making Bach accessible to chamber musicians like never before.

Red Cedar has long been known for presenting both antique and avant-garde music. This concert does both in reimagining antique works and performing them on modern instruments in a brand new context.

Performances of the Backlash Bach program will culminate in April with MainStage events, at 7 p.m. on Friday April 21 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 320 E. College St., Iowa City, IA and 7 p.m. on Saturday April 22 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1285 3rd Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, IA.
