There has been a long history about the relationship between food as art, as sensual, as political. We see food as art everywhere we turn. Food pulls all of our senses to attention immediately. Chefs strive to impress us with every bite being a beautiful and sensual experience. Some of my favorite food inspired movies are, Babette’s Feast and Sideways. My favorite visual food artists are Giuseppe Arcimboldo, still lifes of the Dutch golden age with tables teeming with fruits, ducks and silver platters, Post-Impressionist painter Cezanne, pop artists Wayne Thiebaud and Andy Warhol, political Feminist artists Miriam Schapiro and Judy Chicago and artist Tiberio Simone, just to name a few. This art historical theme and my passion for cooking and food experiences is how the BITEme show developed. So, go ahead, it’s ok to play with your food.
