Anyone registered after that will be added to the following meeting. Stanley Reads puts the museum’s recent exhibitions in conversation with literature. This fall we will consider <a href="[sitetree_link,id=1527]" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Follow Her Lead</a> in relation to Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Both the exhibition and novel focus on women and motherhood across time and geography. During each meeting of the book club, we will pair artwork from the exhibition with chapters from the book to connect deeply with the themes and expand our understanding of the objects and the story. Stanley Reads is led by Kimberly Datchuk, curator of learning & engagement and is presented in partnership with Prairie Lights Books.Homegoing begins in Ghana in the eighteenth century. It follows the lives of two half-sisters and eight generations of their descendants, those who endured enslavement in America and those who remained in Africa. The powerful story shows the deep and lasting effects of slavery. Yaa Gyasi was born in Ghana and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. She earned an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Homegoing won the PEN/Hemingway Award and the NBCC’s John Leonard Award. Saturdays at the Stanley: Artists, Travelers, and Immigrants

Join Brady Plunger, associate curator of education, for a discussion about artists who were also immigrants (like Hans Hofman and Lil Picard). We’ll explore how the movement of people and ideas into, out of, and around the US created new possibilities for artists during the first half of the twentieth century.Join us on Zoom: <a href="https://uiowa.zoom.us/j/96932650776">https://uiowa.zoom.us/j/96932650776</a>Saturdays at the Stanley brings the museum’s collection to you in a casual, fun, and interactive atmosphere. Stanley Quiz Show – Art & Museum Trivia

It’s time to get quizzical with the Stanley Museum of Art’s Stanley Quiz Show! Join us for a live virtual trivia game on Zoom hosted by Brady Plunger, associate curator of education and unabashed lover of gameshow couture. Other members of the museum staff, including superstar director Lauren Lessing, will make guest appearances to give you the 411 on the museum construction project and our plans for moving our extraordinary collections into our new home.This game will feature four rounds of questions about art, museums, and our beloved University of Iowa. And don’t worry, you won’t need a Ph.D. in art history—people with all levels of art knowledge can play to win!You can play as an individual, as a household, or on a “remote” team with friends or loved ones further afield.The first-place team will receive a $75 gift card; second place a $50 gift card; and third place a $35 gift card from a local business.We’ll be playing via Zoom. Stanley Creates: "Fluidity"-inspired paper marbling

Led by Lauren Linahon, art education masters student, UI College of EducationStanley Creates is an interactive program for children and teens to learn artmaking techniques using everyday materials. Taking inspiration from the museum’s collection, participants will play with materials to create unique projects at home. Lauren Linahon will demonstrate the process and provide feedback and support to participants as they make their artwork. In this workshop, participants will learn how to marble paper using materials found at home. Taking inspiration from the exhibition <a href="[sitetree_link,id=1532]">Fluidity</a>, Linahon will guide kids through the process of creating colorful marble patterns on paper. She’ll also give participants ideas for how to use the marbled paper in other projects. Lauren Linahon is a graduate student in art education. She has led artmaking workshops for United Action for Youth and taught studio sections of the course Create, Imagine, Play: Human Development through Arts at the University of Iowa.Free.
