Courage Ride

COURAGE RIDE, HONORING THE LIFE OF SETH BAILEY, IS AN ANNUAL BIKE RIDE WITH MULTIPLE ROUTES OPTIONS THROUGH THE BEAUTIFUL AMISH COUNTRYSIDE NEAR IOWA CITY AND KALONA.

COURAGE RIDE IS DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF THOSE AFFECTED BY SARCOMA CANCER.

Proceeds benefit the Sarcoma Cancer Research Program at the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Courage Ride, an annual charity bike ride benefiting the University of Iowa’s sarcoma cancer research program, will be held Saturday, August 13th at Big Grove Brewery and Taproom in Iowa City. A virtual ride option is also available.

Five routes will take riders through the scenic Amish countryside near Hills and Kalona and out as far as North English and Millersburg, Iowa.

Courage Ride honors the life of Seth Bailey, a courageous young man who died at age 25 from sarcoma cancer in 2003. His parents, Jackie and Tom Bailey partnered with Bicyclists of Iowa City (BIC) in 2005 to create a ride that all levels of bicyclists can enjoy.

Courge Ride organizers anticipate between 500 to 600 bicyclists to register for the event. Beginning at 6:00 a.m., bicyclists will travel on 5 different routes. Routes from Big Grove include lengths of 18, 38 (Seth Bailey Courage Loop), 57, 86 or 100 (The Tom Bailey Century) miles.

Bicyclists can also participate in a silent auction featuring items from a variety of area businesses, organizations and craftsmen.

Proceeds Support Sarcoma Cancer Research

All proceeds from Courage Ride go to the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Sarcoma Research Program. Over the past 17 years, Courage Ride has raised over $725,000 for sarcoma cancer research.

To date, Courage Ride proceeds have seeded numerous sarcoma cancer research grants. Many of those grants have evolved into promising, larger scale research studies. This newfound momentum in the Sarcoma Research Program has created a lot of enthusiasm among researchers, investigators, doctors and cancer care providers at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center. The results are leading to new advancements, new partnerships and attracting some of the best research talent in the nation. Patient lives are improved as a result of these research studies and the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center is gaining worldwide recognition for its expertise in advancing sarcoma research.

Courage Ride’s mission is more crucial than ever considering that funding for cancer research has been shrinking over the past 10 years, according to the American Association for Cancer Research. Yet cancer remains one of the nation’s costliest diseases. The American Cancer Society’s 2022 estimates for soft tissue sarcomas in the United States (these statistics include both adults and children) project that 13,130 new soft tissue sarcomas will be diagnosed (7,470 cases in males and 5,660 cases in females) and 5,270 Americans (2,840 males and 2,430 females) are expected to die of soft tissue sarcomas. Over 100 adults and children in Iowa are diagnosed with sarcoma each year. Sarcoma receives one to two percent of all cancer research funding.

Discount For Early Registration

Registration is now open. Early adult registration is $75 (through Friday, August 5). Beginning August 6, adult registration is $85. On-site registration Friday, August 12 and 12 is $90. Youth registration (13-17) is $15. Registration includes breakfast and lunch, entertaining rest stops and SAG support. Live music will be held throughout the afternoon.

Visit www.CourageRide.org for more information about the event including registration, route maps, parking, or to make a donation.

ABOUT THE RIDE

Start/finish location: Big Grove Brewery and Taproom in Iowa City

Over 600 riders are expected to register

5 total routes, ranging from a 18 miles to a century ride (18, 38, 57, 86, 100 miles)

Registration at Big Grove opens at 6 a.m.

Includes breakfast and lunch

Rest stops with food, drinks and live music

Cyclists receive detailed maps, SAG support and bike mechanics

Courage Ride jerseys available to order

A silent auction at Big Grove featuring items from area businesses, organizations and craftsmen

Adult-Early Registration (through Friday, August 5th) $75

Adult-Week of Registration (starting Saturday, August 6) $85

On-site registration Friday, August 12 and 13 is $90.

Youth (13-17) $15

Children 12 & under are free.

Visit CourageRide.org for route maps, registration information or to make a donation.

Also follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!

Join us for this fun event and help us "Fight Sarcoma Cancer. Bandleader and chief lyricist Cleto Cordero is fine with examining the present. There’s an appreciation for all the sharp detail and high-spirited emotions of today. Flatland Cavalry—the aforementioned Cordero, guitarist Reid Dillon, bassist Jonathan Saenz, drummer Jason Albers, and newest member, fiddle player Wesley Hall—has been stretching their legs across the country this past year after honing their craft and voice in the music boomtown of Lubbock, Texas. Homeland Insecurity finds Flatland further evolving as musicians and storytellers. They continue to expand their sonic palettes while remaining true to those defining characteristics that made them rising standouts years ago. On their previous releases, Come May and Humble Folks, Cordero and company harnessed untethered emotions, feel-good rhythms, and simple raw energy to make it into the hearts of fans and critics. There was power in Cordero’s proverbial pen that resonated with the highs and lows of college life. “We’re all just out of college,” says Cordero. “We’re in our mid-twenties. We’re all told growing up that by the time you’re out of school, you’ll have it all figured out, but that’s not really how it is. You’re still out there trying to find yourself.” It’s not a jump into adult life. That’s a facade and outright lie. Life doesn’t happen that way. You don’t turn 25 and become a fully-formed person. Rather, Homeland Insecurity finds Flatland exploring the anxieties, unsureness, growth, resilience, falters, fear, maturation, and eventual lessons learned as your grow older. By no means does Cordero and company feel they have it figured out, but rather, are trying to figure it out themselves as well. “I think at some point, you feel like you need to grow-up, but you don’t know how,” says Cordero. “You’re searching for that path though. You’re overturning every rock trying to find the secret that gets on to the next. I’m not trying to be a teacher or anything. I just wish someone would have told me earlier on and saved me the heartache of it all.” Flatland is unabashed in this search knowing that they’ve always wanted to be band where their crowd grew along with them. Cordero knows he could have just revisited old themes, young lust narratives, and drinking days glory for another album. He could have easily rehashed old ideas and gotten a pass for them as long as they were catchy, but he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself. There’s an uneasiness in his voice when even broaching the subject of cookie-cutter songs. You can hear him loosening a tie around his neck that isn’t there. “I had a lot I wanted to say,” says Cordero. “I knew there was a better way of saying it. I didn’t want to write at the same pace I was at during Humble Folks. And I don’t want to write at this pace in the future.” Homeland Insecurity sees Cordero sanding and smoothing the edges as a lyricist and storyteller. He’s always had an ear for memorable melodies and a gift at finding the heart of the story. But here, he expands and challenges himself to not only write at a deeper thematic level, but to simply become a better songwriter. “Everything I’d written before, it was always just something I had to get out. It was always spurred on by an emotion, but that doesn’t mean the lyrical side was rich,” says Cordero. “I have to really say something. Everything has to be purposeful. I can’t get stuck.” Indeed. Flatland Cavalry isn’t stuck in a rut. Despite embracing the harsh realities of modern civilization and the anxieties of life, Flatland carves out their own path on Homeland Insecurity.
2022-02-01 23:00:00 -06007/16/227:00 p.m.First Avenue ClubIowa City -
