Meet the Author - Peter Looney

Join us for a FB Live event featuring Peter Looney!

From Peter:
When I was a little kid growing up on the farm, the eight of us would pile into the car and make the occasional special trip into Cedar Rapids. Picture a skinny little kid, on an older sister's lap, nose pressed up against the car window, gazing in wonder at the tall buildings. And look at all these people – there must be HUNDREDS of them!

Later, as an adult living in Cedar Rapids with my own family, I'd wonder about all the landmarks I kept hearing about – the Majestic, the Allison, the Montrose, the Masonic Temple, the Union Depot, Star Wagon – where had they been? Where did they go? What's there now?

That island in the middle of the river, in the heart of downtown – why are there buildings on it? Did there REALLY used to be a roller coaster on it? I'd hear about this outdoor movie theater, only it was a walk-in, not a drive-in. And all these other grand old theaters, and crazy dance halls, and magnificent hotels, and I'd hear people talk about four different amusement parks, and five different racetracks. Where were they, and when were they there, and WHERE DID THEY GO???

So I started collecting old pictures that I'd come across, in newspapers, magazines, books, and eventually, on the internet. I'd study them with a magnifying glass. I made lists of those old places, and their addresses, and the years they were there, and what was there before them, and what is there now. Followed by hundreds and hundreds of hours probing and researching old newspapers, phone books, and city directories, to find accurate dates of existence and operation... resulting in a book, Lost Cedar Rapids.
4/20/216:30 p.m.The History CenterCedar Rapids -

Love Letters

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards and continues through a lifetime.

Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years-where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of "good schools." While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved and it makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave to, each other over the years-physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be.
2021-03-24 20:30:00 -05004/15/217:00 p.m.Waterloo Community PlayhouseWaterloo -

Metta Yoga with Prairiewoods

Experience the healing powers of meditative yoga via Zoom with Prairiewoods. Join us as we link our movements with our breath and cultivate strength, flexibility and relaxation through regular hatha-style yoga classes. RYT-200 Hour Certified Yoga Alliance Instructors Carla Brems and Heather English offer Gentle/Beginner’s Yoga (Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30–10:30 a.m.). People of all fitness levels and abilities are encouraged to participate whenever available. Carla Brems enjoys teaching hatha-style yoga so that all feel welcome and safe to appreciate and enjoy the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that yoga can bring. Heather English began practicing yoga for the mental health benefits and became a yoga instructor in order to share these amazing benefits with others. Heather is inspired by the potential that a regular yoga practice has for impacting so many areas of life. In fact, it was her yoga training that motivated her to begin crafting as a career, to share her crafting with others, and to regularly explore the intersection of yoga and creativity. Let’s see how Carla and Heather can help us benefit from yoga! Please plan to attend via Zoom from a quiet corner in your home with your screen of choice! The cost is $60 for a 6-punch card or $99 for an 11-punch card. For more information or to register for the Zoom link, contact Carla at bremscarla@gmail.com or 319-533-3772.
2021-04-26 22:30:00 -05004/26/219:30 a.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
