Mindfulness for Families at Prairiewoods

We continually look for creative ways to bring awareness, compassion, kindness, peace and tranquility into our homes. These monthly opportunities at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) are for parents and children from kindergarten through grade 12 to attend together. We will focus on simple, mindful practices to create peaceful awareness in the parent, child and home. Facilitators Kim Seward, BSN, RN, CMI (Certified Mindfulness Instructor), and Ann Jackson, PBVM, will guide us to explore and engage fun mindfulness activities to do together as a family. Practicing foundational aspects of mindful awareness—noticing senses, emotions and thoughts in fun and practical ways—will cultivate awareness, a greater understanding of emotions, kindness and compassion in all relationships, especially the parent-child relationship. As parents and children attend these sessions together, they will build a comprehensive mindfulness toolkit to use for future family enjoyment. Art Exhibit: Keeping the Bubble Happy

Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present "Keeping the Bubble Happy", a solo exhibit of new works by Mary Zeran.

This show investigates the idea that we all possess our inner world in relation to the external- our bubble. The works featured are a response to keeping both of these in equilibrium; the artist illustrates her personal reflection to what that means with color, movement, texture and composition. “I structure my world around a system of patterns and habits to create a psychological ecosystem that allows me to transcend my sadness, fears, insecurities, and doubts”, says Zeran. Painterly organic shapes and patterned blocks are affixed together in chaotic harmony. “I am a participant in the collaboration with the material and my atmosphere is airy within dense and transparent layers, focusing on interactions with the natural world around me.” As she abstracts flowers, trees, and the colors of nature, she uses this language to bring her closer to her family’s craft traditions while exploring her own internal voice. Exhibiting works are largely displayed on panel and paper and include her signature “object” renderings.

Mary Zeran received her B.F.A and M.F.A from University of Iowa. She was born in Iowa City in 1964 and now lives and works in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is the recipient of several awards and honors and her works are in numerous public and private collections as well as many notable corporate collections. Her collage works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad. Museum collections include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, and Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Cedar Rapids IA. She has been reviewed in The Art Examiner, Seattle Post Intelligencer, Artweek, and Kolaj Magazine.

Parking, Accessibility:
A limited parking lot is available with 1 handicap space. On street parking is available on 3rd avenue and 8th street- non-metered. The MedQuarter features protected bike lanes and bicycle “parking” can be found on the opposite side of the building by the Pocket Park on 3rd and 8th.
All exhibit receptions are free and open to the public.
2019-12-17 17:00:00 -060012/17/1910:00 a.m.Gilded Pear GalleryCedar Rapids -

Unwrapped: Gifts from the Peter Norton Family Christmas Project, 1988-2018

Retired computer entrepreneur Peter Norton (Norton Antivirus Software) is a contemporary art collector as well as an active participant in various civic and philanthropic activities. In 1988, the Norton Family Christmas Project began commissioning artists to create original, multiple-edition works that were mailed as holiday greetings to friends, colleagues, and selected institutions. In 2017, the CRMA received the bulk of these wonderful holiday greetings from Director Emeritus Terry Pitts and his wife Kathy Hall.

The objects and artists’ books that comprise the Project collection are incredibly varied. A sense of whimsy runs through many of the pieces: salt and pepper shakers become snow globes, a music box exhorts us to be silent. Many works also have a sociopolitical focus, addressing issues as varied as slavery, AIDS, and gender identity. Taken together, the Norton Family Christmas Project objects and artists’ books provide a wonderful snapshot of the last thirty years of activity in the art world at large, presenting the work of both emerging and more established artists. The 2018 edition of the Norton Family Christmas Project was the last and ended the series.
2019-12-17 16:00:00 -060012/17/1912:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Up All Night: The Art of the Dark

From Renaissance artists painting images of the Nativity to 18th century artists depicting new scientific discoveries to Post-Impressionist painters such as Van Gogh turning the night sky into a mesmeric swirl of brush strokes, the night has been inspiring artists for hundreds of years. The dark can symbolize many things in art: mystery, solitude, fear, superstition, secrets, or death. The striking juxtaposition of light against the night may represent hope, discovery, magic, the evidence of a divine presence, or other forms of literal “enlightenment.” Historically, night scenes were a chance for artists to show off their mastery of painting light effects. Moonlight, candles, and later, electric lights against the dark added drama to the scene. Up All Night celebrates the night scenes in the CRMA’s collection: Grant Wood’s evocative Quaker Oats, Marvin Cone’s charming Christmas cards, M.C. Escher’s tesselated Day into Night, amongst others. Enjoy the look at one of art history’s oldest ways of infusing drama into art.

2019-12-17 16:00:00 -060012/17/1912:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Anam Cara Art Journaling at Prairiewoods

As John O’Donohue writes, “Anam is the Gaelic word for soul and cara is the word for friend. So anam cara in the Celtic world was the soul friend.” Facilitator Angie Pierce Jennings leads these monthly sessions, which stand alone, at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha). We will read and reflect on passages from O’Donohue’s deeply spiritual book Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom. We will use the process of art journaling as a creative way to further contemplate and explore the concepts of the book. Feel free to bring a journal or mixed media tablet, colored pencils and watercolor paints. (We will have some art supplies available.) Artists of all experience levels, including beginners, are welcome. Feel free to enjoy this as a series or individual sessions. Please register by the previous Friday.
