Mapping Exclusion Tour – FREE

Join the AAMI for a special tour of our temporary exhibit, Mapping Exclusion: Redlining in Iowa! This free, staff-led tour will take visitors through this popular exhibit.

Mapping Exclusion explores the history of redlining in Iowa. Redlining is the systematic denial of various services by federal and local government agencies and the private sector to residents of specific neighborhoods. Black populations in seven Iowa cities -Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Sioux City, Dubuque, Davenport, Des Moines, and Waterloo – were subject to redline mapping. The exhibit will look at these cities and the long-term effects of redlining on the current issues faced in these areas today.
2022-08-10 19:00:00 -05009/01/226:00 p.m.African American Museum of IowaCedar Rapids -

Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II

Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian, examines the complicated history and impact of Executive Order 9066 that led to the incarceration of 75,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry and 45,000 Japanese nationals following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Young and old lived crowded together in hastily built camps, endured poor living conditions, and were under the constant watch of military guards for two and a half years. Meanwhile, brave Japanese American men risked their lives fighting for the United States. Some 40 years later, members of the Japanese American community led the nation to confront the wrong it had done—and urged Congress to make it right.
