Art Lovers Book Club: Blue Arabesque: A Search for the Sublime by Patricia Hampl

Just out of college, Patricia Hampl was mesmerized by a Matisse painting she saw in the Art Institute of Chicago: an aloof woman gazing at goldfish in a bowl, a mysterious Moroccan screen behind her. This woman seemed a welcome secular version of the nuns of Hampl’s girlhood, free and untouchable, a poster girl for twentieth-century feminism. In Blue Arabesque, Hampl explores the allure of that woman, immersed in leisure, so at odds with the increasing rush of the modern era. Her tantalizing meditation takes us to the Cote d’Azur and North Africa, from cloister to harem, pondering figures as diverse as Eugène Delacroix, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Katherine Mansfield. Returning always to Matisse and his obsessive portraits of languid women, Hampl discovers they were not decorative indulgences but surprising acts of integrity.
2022-03-17 17:00:00 -05008/18/224:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul at Prairiewoods

The Celtic people seemed to be very much in tune with their environment and the natural world. What is the wisdom from our Celtic ancestors we instinctively recognize and trust as we travel through these seemingly disturbing times? John Phillip Newell explores some of this wisdom by looking at the lives and teachings of prophetic figures throughout the centuries in his newest book, Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul: Celtic Wisdom for Awakening to What Our Souls Know and Healing the World. This book focuses on the wisdom of Pelagius, Brigid of Kildare, John Scotus Eriugena, Alexander John Scott, John Muir, de Chardin, George MacLeod and Kenneth White and offers us a chance to more fully recognize some of these wisdom callings from within ourselves. From the book’s introduction: “We know things in the core of our being that we have not necessarily been taught, and some of this deep knowing may actually be at odds with what our society or religion has tried to teach us. This book is about reawakening to what we know in the depths of our being, that the earth is sacred and that this awareness is at the heart of every human being and life-form. To awaken again to this deep knowing is to be transformed in the ways we choose to live and relate and act.” John Philip Newell is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher and popular speaker and the widely read author of several books, including The Rebirthing of God and A New Ancient Harmony. You are invited to gather online with others in conversation around the people and ideas introduced by Newell in his book. Facilitator Ellen Bruckner will guide us as we gather via Zoom for a total of four sessions, each two hours in length (on either Tuesday mornings or Wednesday evenings). We will try to pay close attention to how the wisdom we explore has an impact on our own lives today. Much of the time will be spent in conversation, and reading the book Sacred Earth, Sacred Soul is recommended. The cost is $30 for the four-part series, and registration is required to get the Zoom link. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2022-05-24 11:00:00 -05005/25/229:00 a.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

Mushroom Foraging 101

You may already enjoy edible mushrooms when dining out or when you purchase them from the store. Come discover how to ethically harvest mushrooms from the forest. We will explore diagnostic features including size, color, shape of cap and stem, underside features including pores, gills and teeth, and more. Because mother nature is unpredictable, we can not say for sure what we will find on our journey. We will be on the look out for edible mushrooms including oysters, golden oysters, woodear, chicken of the woods, hen of the woods, dryads saddle, and chanterelles. We may also encounter nonedibles along the way.

Remember to always be 100% sure on your identification before consuming wild found foods.

You are invited no matter your level of outdoor experience.

Yummy snacks generously provided by New Pioneer Co-op.

THNGS TO BRING

Standard attire and sun protection for hands-on outdoor learning: hat, leather gloves, jeans, sunscreen

A notebook and a pen/pencil for writing and drawing (optional)

A sturdy outdoor knife with a fixed blade (optional)

REGISTRATION

Sliding scale fee: $25 - $0, based upon your access to resources.

This class is a part of a 4-class series.
