Seriously Funny: American Gothic Parodies

Grant Wood’s American Gothic is probably the world’s most parodied American painting, second only to Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. The fact that thousands of parodies of American Gothic exist, dating back several decades, speaks to the enduring inspiration of one of America’s greatest works of art. This exhibition—a first for the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art—will look at many of these parodies—some in the flesh on the gallery’s walls and many others digitally projected in an attempt to share the incredible reach of this iconic painting. From Bill and Hillary Clinton to Leonardo and Mona Lisa to RuPaul as male and female, these parodies speak to how this one painting serves as the basis for looking at various contemporary people and issues. Wood’s impactful 1930 painting continues to inspire “artists” of all ages and skills in a playful and humorous way that Wood would no doubt have applauded.
2021-04-30 16:00:00 -05004/30/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Grant Wood Revealed: Rarely Seen Works by an American Master

Launching the CRMA's year-long celebration of the 175th anniversary of Iowa's statehood will be an unusual look at Iowa’s most famous artist, Grant Wood. While known for his iconic American Gothic (Art Institute of Chicago) and other Regionalist works from his mature style, Grant Wood was constantly exploring styles, techniques, and media. This exhibition will bring together works from both the CRMA collection as well as from private collections to celebrate Wood’s inquisitive mind. Rarely-seen paintings will be joined by diverse metalwork pieces, drawings, and studies to construct a fuller view of Wood’s genius.
2021-04-30 16:00:00 -05004/30/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Americans in Paris: Grant Wood and Marvin Cone's 1920 Trip to Paris

For three months in the summer of 1920, Grant Wood and his best friend Marvin Cone traveled to Paris to see great art, soak up the sights, and paint. This brief sojourn proved to be pivotal for both artists, enhancing their nascent interest in Impressionism and painting en plein air. While each artist discontinued painting in this style beyond the early 1930s, this trip to Paris (Wood’s first trip abroad, Cone’s second) was critical to their development. What the artists did, saw, and painted is carefully outlined in Cone’s meticulous and well-written diary of the trip, including where the artists painted on which days. As such, this diary enables the ability to date certain works to the precise date of creation. It also allows viewers to see how each artist depicted the same scene, often in very different terms.
2021-04-30 16:00:00 -05004/30/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Spirituality in the 21st Century: Flaring Forth into Fullness of Life with Prairiewoods

Friday, April 30, 7–9 p.m., & Saturday, May 1, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

Prairiewoods celebrates our 25th Jubilee with a truly special Spirituality in the 21st Century event, offered entirely online via Zoom. This year’s online gathering features Thomas Berry biographers Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim from the Yale Forum on Religion and Ecology (https://fore.yale.edu/). Tucker and Grim are the executive producers of the Emmy Award–winning film Journey of the Universe, narrated by Brian Swimme (https://www.journeyoftheuniverse.org/). This year’s event also welcomes eco-philosopher David Abram, founding director of the Alliance for Wild Ethics (https://wildethics.org/) and author of Spell of the Sensuous and Becoming Animal. We will also be joined by Joanna Macy–protégé and Active Hope aficionada Kathleen Rude, author of the eco-mystical novel The Redemption of Red Fire Woman (https://gaiawisdom.org/). The beautiful musical accompaniment of Sara Thomsen (https://sarathomsen.com) will weave lyrical poetry throughout the weekend. This event promises to be one of profound story, an opportunity for healing and refreshment, a wakeful enlightenment for our imagination with music as balm for the soul, and a gentle invitation for immersion into the wider “We” we have been longing for with all our hearts. From Prairiewoods’ founding until 2021, our mission has been framed with the Universe Story, a 13.7-billion-year journey that celebrates the wild fecundity of life from the Great Flaring Forth forward. Mary Evelyn and John share a passion and abiding love for the pioneering work of self-described “geologian” Thomas Berry, as well as his field’s foremost formative architect, Jesuit paleontologist and eco-philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, SJ. They will take us along on a fantastic exploration of how Teilhard’s and Thomas’ work continues to unfold in eco-spirituality circles today. As a spellbinding artist and cartographer of the numinous in creation, David captivates listeners with his uncanny ability to draw us into communion with the breathing, animate Earth, a community of living subjects all pulsating with the rhythm of the unfolding cosmos. After an hour or two with David submerging us in what Berry called the “single gorgeous celebratory event” that is creation, we will begin to feel more in sync with our creature-kin and arbor-elders, the stones and the crashing waves, than we ever thought possible. And as an environmentalist, shamanic practitioner, writer and activist/educator, Kathleen will invite us to enter into the very fabric of creation’s extended family, the ineffable beauty and mystery of the web of life, as healing for our spiritual malaise. Along with our beloved musician-of-Earth Sara Thomsen, they will coax us (ala Thoreau) to “live deep and suck all the marrow out of life,” and celebrate the unfolding of the Universe Story as a context for spiritual sojourners in 2021. This two-day event will take place entirely online via Zoom, and the cost is $75. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700. If you are up for the mission, come expecting the joy of surprise and a taste of new life!

2021-02-06 21:00:00 -06004/30/217:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
UI Dance presents BFA Concert

University of Iowa Department of Dance
BFA Concert
Friday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m. CST
virtualdance.studio.uiowa.edu

This online concert will feature works by this year’s class of graduating BFA seniors from the University of Iowa Department of Dance, presenting their final capstone projects with a focus in choreography and/or performance. We invite you to join us on Friday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m. CST at virtualdance.studio.uiowa.edu to experience these students’ final works in our department.

The following works will be presented:

Yet Another Skin to Shed
Choreography by Tatum Beynon
Yet Another Skin to Shed is an abstract on the personal experience of growth and change. Experientially driven, this piece captures the complex, confusing, and chaotic feelings that arise amidst transition, healing, and moving on.

Solidarity
Choreography by Isabella Buscaglia
Creating this work has been a very special and intimate experience for me. From reflection to research to creation, each aspect of this piece holds a special place in my heart. Art inspires art and I tried to capture that shared experience in this piece. Chicago is also my home—it’s where I was born, where I live and where I first fell in love with dance. The city has crafted me into the artist I am today and for that I am so thankful.

isn't she enough
Choreography by Laren Chang

As long as I am
Choreography by Danica Clayton
This process started at least a year ago with the original concept of breath and how it has served my life by guiding emotions and how it changed my life as I saw new life and death. From there, I researched the function of breath and types of breath, as well as improvisation techniques. I used inspiration from scientific research and personal experience as prompts for improvisational movement. The movement was captured on film and translated into choreographed phrases. The piece starts at the end of the breath and ends at the beginning of the breath, a new beginning.

In Commune With
Choreography by Erin Evans
In Commune With is the product of my exploration of how human lived experiences mimic the natural world around us. I spent time learning about dendrochronology, the study of growth rings in trees, and used that knowledge to try to discover what the human equivalent of a growth ring is. I believe people, just like trees, hold on to events and experiences for their whole lives, and that shapes the person they are constantly growing into.

100 Days
Choreography by Sarah McCluskey
I filmed myself improvising every day, for 100 days. This served as a mental and physical check-in to process and acknowledge my wellbeing for that day. Movement from each of these videos has been choreographed into five short works, each displaying how I experienced the five stages of change during the 100 days.

all my love, Allie
Choreography by Alexandra Recht
all my love, Allie is a work that explores resiliency, healing, and hope in the wake of trauma. Here I present to you my full self, unfiltered, as I do my best to make something beautiful out of the darkness.

Visit our Virtual Concert Venue in advance of the performance to learn more about the works, the choreographers, and all of the collaborators.

Join us at virtualdance.studio.uiowa.edu for this free performance. Tickets are not required.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events.

2021-05-04 16:00:00 -05005/04/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids
