Art Lovers Book Club: The House of Fragile Things: Jewish Art Collectors and the Fall of France by James McAuley

In the dramatic years between 1870 and the end of World War II, a number of prominent French Jews—pillars of an embattled community—invested their fortunes in France’s cultural artifacts, sacrificed their sons to the country’s army, and were ultimately rewarded by seeing their collections plundered and their families deported to Nazi concentration camps.

In this rich, evocative account, James McAuley explores the central role that art and material culture played in the assimilation and identity of French Jews in the fin-de-siècle. Weaving together narratives of various figures, some familiar from the works of Marcel Proust and the diaries of Jules and Edmond Goncourt—the Camondos, the Rothschilds, the Ephrussis, the Cahens d'Anvers—McAuley shows how Jewish art collectors contended with a powerful strain of anti-Semitism: they were often accused of “invading” France’s cultural patrimony. The collections these families left behind—many ultimately donated to the French state—were their response, tragic attempts to celebrate a nation that later betrayed them.
2022-03-17 17:00:00 -050010/20/224:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Iowa City Genealogical Society

The May 21st program of the Iowa City Genealogical Society will be presented by Joel and Cathy Helman. Cathy’s great-great grandfather was Joel Garretson, an Underground Railroad “conductor” who assisted fugitive slaves advance from the home of Henderson and Elizabeth Lewelling in Salem, Henry County, Iowa to the next “safe house” during their escape northward to Canada. The National Park Service includes the Lewelling home as an important site in the nation’s “Network to Freedom.” Lewelling, Garretson and their Quaker neighbors were strong willed abolitionists during the pioneer days of Iowa and the period leading to the Civil War. Dave and Cathy will also trace the ancestry of Garretson, Lewelling and Edwin Coppock, a co-conspirator with abolitionist John Brown.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 at the LDS Family History Library, 2730 Bradford Drive, Iowa City. A wheelchair accessible entrance is available from the east parking lot. Masks are encouraged and social distancing will be practiced.

It is also possible to participate in the meeting via Zoom. Send an email to icgsnews@gmail.com to receive details on how to join the meeting.
2022-05-08 10:30:00 -05005/21/229:30 a.m.LDS Family History CenterIowa City -
