<p>A color-specific celebration of Iowa artists! Juried by CRMA Associate Curator Kate Kunau, <em>Into the Blue</em> draws work from artists all over the state of Iowa. Anam Cara Art Journaling at Prairiewoods
<p>As John O’Donohue writes, “<em>Anam</em> is the Gaelic word for soul and <em>cara</em> is the word for friend. So <em>anam cara</em> in the Celtic world was the soul friend.” In these four sessions, which stand alone, facilitator Angie Pierce Jennings will guide us to read and reflect on passages from O’Donohue’s deeply spiritual book <em>Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom.</em> We will use the process of art journaling as a creative way to further contemplate and explore the concepts of the book. Feel free to bring a journal or mixed media tablet, colored pencils and watercolor paints. (We will have some art supplies available.) Artists of all experience levels, including beginners, are welcome. Feel free to enjoy this as a series or individual sessions. Please register for each session by the previous Friday. World Wednesday: Greek Mosaic Art
<p>This year's Summer Reading Program theme is "A Universe of Stories." One way we can discover new stories around the world (and beyond) is to encourage cultural literacy. On Wednesdays, join us for an activity that will help us learn and understand something new about different world cultures.</p><p>One of the lasting artistic legacies from the ancient Greeks is the art of the mosaic. A mosaic is a picture made up of small pieces of glass, pottery, or small tiles. Thousands of small pieces of colored tiles are placed together so that all together they make up a picture. Often depicting pagan gods, people and animals, the Ancient Greeks were the first to use what is known today as tesserae or the many small pieces of marble, glass, or tile that comprise a mosaic artwork. So <em>anam cara</em> in the Celtic world was the soul friend.” In these four sessions, which stand alone, facilitator Angie Pierce Jennings will guide us to read and reflect on passages from O’Donohue’s deeply spiritual book <em>Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom.</em> We will use the process of art journaling as a creative way to further contemplate and explore the concepts of the book. Feel free to bring a journal or mixed media tablet, colored pencils and watercolor paints. (We will have some art supplies available.) Artists of all experience levels, including beginners, are welcome. Feel free to enjoy this as a series or individual sessions. Please register for each session by the previous Friday. Into the Blue: An All-Iowa Juried Exhibition
<p>A color-specific celebration of Iowa artists! Juried by CRMA Associate Curator Kate Kunau, <em>Into the Blue</em> draws work from artists all over the state of Iowa. The work on display must have been created within the last three years and blue must be the dominant color. <em>Into the Blue</em> celebrates the hue in both two and three-dimensional works across all media and examines how blue has been incredibly important to artists for centuries: From the luxurious (and expensive!) ultramarine used to color the Virgin Mary’s cloak and star-studded vaults of heaven in medieval and Renaissance art to the exuberance of Yves Klein’s trademarked shade and, blue has long inspired artists and this exhibition.</p> 2019-07-31 16:00:00 -0500
