Treasuring Our Trees, Part 2

Did you participate in our Oct. 25 online event Treasuring Our Trees: Cedar Rapids & Surrounding Areas Following the Derecho? If so, you know how powerful the experience of gathering together on behalf of our fallen trees was for our communal psyche. We began the long process of grieving and healing following the decimation of our trees from the Aug. 10 derecho. An area-wide memorial afforded us the opportunity to honor, celebrate, give thanks and remember our revered arbor-elders through ritual, poetry, prayer and song. During the wintering months, we continue the journey of healing by going deeper, listening, doing the hard interior work of reflection and healing, while learning about ongoing care for creation and planning for the future. Throughout the week of Jan. 25–29, we will offer a series of 40-minute Zoom sessions to help us learn from the trees how to plunge deeper, to renew ourselves spiritually from the battering that has been 2020, and to learn how to care for the remaining wildlife habitat, stumps, logs, hollowed out soil, water and air that have been affected by the derecho, and also how to plan for spring planting when the time is ripe. Times and topics are to be determined, so watch www.Prairiewoods.org for opportunities to log onto your favorite sessions and make the most of the dormancy of winter! In caring for our trees, together we can learn the art of communal healing and co-creating a bright future. This online program via Zoom is free and is co-sponsored by Prairiewoods, Trees Forever, Indian Creek Nature Center, Cornell College Chaplain & Spiritual Life, Winding Pathways, People’s Unitarian Universalist Church and Coe College. You do not need to have attended Part 1 in October to join us for this session. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
1/25/218:00 a.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

Virtual Thursday Forum: Scenic Long-Distance Hikes in the United Kingdom

Floyd Sandford, Emeritus Professor of Biology

In the United Kingdom, walking is one of the most popular recreational activities, and because of this, England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are excellent destinations for hikers. Because of liberal rules for rights of way, U.K. citizens and visitors alike are permitted easy access to most of the countryside. A vast network of public footpaths and national trails allows day ramblers or long-distance hikers to experience beautiful and dramatic coastal scenery and lovely countryside with attractive villages of thatched-roof cottages, gardens, historical monuments, abbey ruins and more. This two-session Thursday Forum will introduce two of the many scenic, long-distance hiking trails in the U.K. and take you on a virtual journey through the stunning landscapes of Scotland and England. In the first session, we will travel Scotland’s West Highland Way, one of the U.K.’s premier hiking experiences. Our journey begins in Milngavie (near Glasgow), follows the shores of Loch Lomond (one of the largest lakes in the U.K.) and continues north into the beautiful Scottish Highlands. In session two, we will explore one of England’s most popular long-distance hikes, the 102-mile-long Cotswold Way, which begins in the picturesque village of Chipping Camden and ends in the historic city of Bath. In addition to admiring the scenery, we will learn some historical background about our destinations, including the destruction of abbeys during the reign of Henry VIII and the impact of the English Civil War on Cotswold villages.
2020-09-16 23:58:00 -05002/11/2112:00 a.m.Coe CollegeCedar Rapids -

Active Hope: Answering Earth’s Call for Transformative Healing & Loving Action Retreat with Prairiewoods

As Joanna Macy writes, “Active Hope is not wishful thinking. Active Hope is waking up to the beauty of life on whose behalf we can act. We belong to this world. The web of life is calling us forth at this time and we are here to play our part. Active Hope is a readiness to discover the strengths in ourselves and in others; a readiness to discover the reasons for hope and the occasions for love.” In this online retreat via Zoom, we will move through the spiral of The Work That Reconnects with the understanding that Earth is calling us to engage in transformative healing and loving action during these challenging times. Through our exploration, we will cultivate and strengthen our resilience to engage with COVID-19, the climate crisis, racial and environmental injustice, and overall anxiety in our lives. Joanna Macy–protege and Active Hope aficionada Kathleen Rude, author of the eco-mystical novel The Redemption of Red Fire Woman, will facilitate this 24-hour retreat. We will spend time online in community and offline in self-reflection (with time outside, if we’re able) to receive inspiration and healing for our weary, overwhelmed hearts and souls. In supportive and trustworthy space, we will honor our pain for the world, reconnect to active hope, and find clarity around how we can play a part in the healing of our communities and our beautiful planet. This online retreat is designed with lots of breaks, offline exercises and a lunch break. The workshop is highly interactive with ritual and sharing in pairs, small groups and full group conversations. It includes experiential practices, inspirational readings, singing and simple rituals. It’s engaging and invigorating and gives us tools for dealing with the challenges of living in difficult times. The cost of this online retreat is $150. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2/12/216:30 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
