Braiding Sweetgrass Walking Book Club
<p>Join us for a walking book club discussion of Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. While this event is free, we ask that anyone wishing to participate register so we can ensure we have enough discussion leaders to maintain proper social distancing.</p><p>This event is sponsored by Swamp Fox Bookstore, the Marion Public Library and Marion Parks & Recreation to foster a discussion about our connection to nature and how we can restore our community after last year's devastating derecho.</p><p>You can check out copies of Braiding Sweetgrass from the Marion Public Library or purchase a copy of the book (both hardcover and paperbacks available) from Swamp Fox Bookstore.</p><p>All participants must wear a mask and maintain social distancing guidelines. Early Stage Dementia Support Group
<p>Early Stage Support Groups benefit persons living with dementia by providing a platform to build a network of others sharing a similar experience; offer ways to solve common problems; talk through challenges and suggest ways to cope; create a safe space to share feelings, needs, and concerns; and learn about local resources. To determine whether a person living with dementia is fit for the group, a screening is required. This ensures the group meets the needs of its members. In order to participate in the group, each member must: have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, have mild memory loss or other mild symptoms due to dementia, acknowledge their diagnosis and related symptoms, be willing to participate in group discussions, be able to communicate their symptoms and experience, and have no other serious medical conditions or mental illness that could put anyone at risk. Group members and care partners must also recognize that membership in the group is temporary, as all persons with dementia will progress beyond the ability to participate. This group will meet monthly on the third Tuesday at 10:00 am beginning March 16, 2021, and it will run for six months. After six months, all members will be rescreened. Those still fit will be invited back to the group, while those who have progressed, and their caregivers, will be transitioned to more appropriate resources. New members will be accepted until May 2021. <p>Join us for a FB Live event featuring Peter Looney!</p><p>From Peter:<br>When I was a little kid growing up on the farm, the eight of us would pile into the car and make the occasional special trip into Cedar Rapids. Picture a skinny little kid, on an older sister's lap, nose pressed up against the car window, gazing in wonder at the tall buildings. And look at all these people – there must be HUNDREDS of them!</p><p>Later, as an adult living in Cedar Rapids with my own family, I'd wonder about all the landmarks I kept hearing about – the Majestic, the Allison, the Montrose, the Masonic Temple, the Union Depot, Star Wagon – where had they been? Where did they go? What's there now?</p><p>That island in the middle of the river, in the heart of downtown – why are there buildings on it? Did there REALLY used to be a roller coaster on it? I'd hear about this outdoor movie theater, only it was a walk-in, not a drive-in. And all these other grand old theaters, and crazy dance halls, and magnificent hotels, and I'd hear people talk about four different amusement parks, and five different racetracks. Where were they, and when were they there, and WHERE DID THEY GO???</p><p>So I started collecting old pictures that I'd come across, in newspapers, magazines, books, and eventually, on the internet. I'd study them with a magnifying glass. I made lists of those old places, and their addresses, and the years they were there, and what was there before them, and what is there now. Followed by hundreds and hundreds of hours probing and researching old newspapers, phone books, and city directories, to find accurate dates of existence and operation... resulting in a book, Lost Cedar Rapids.</p>

Valašsky Frgal: large kolach
<p>Most of Czech food lovers have heard about kolaches. In this class, you will be introduced to a version that is not so commonly known in the U.S., but it is incredibly delicious and popular in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Valassky frgal has a shape like a pizza, but the dough is clearly a special kolach dough. The topping is usually at least 50% of all kolach, so if you like a lot of toppings, this will be your favorite. The final touch is a delicate topping of streusel that will bring this kolach to perfection.
