Blakelock: By the Light of the Moon Art Exhibit

Forgeries, mental illness, intrigue, and rapid fame—the dramatic circumstances of Ralph Albert Blakelock’s life often overshadow the merits of his work. By the Light of the Moon will feature eight exceptional artworks by Blakelock from the museum collection. Born in 1847, his early paintings were highly detailed landscapes inspired by Hudson River School painters. After traveling to the American West and becoming familiar with Barbizon painters, Blakelock developed the atmospheric landscapes for which he is known. Drenched in darkness and silvery moonlight, his thickly painted landscapes have a distinctive otherworldly quality. This exhibition will explore Blakelock’s body of work and how his interest in spiritualism is reflected in his artistic practice.
2021-01-26 17:00:00 -06001/26/2110:00 a.m.Figge Art MuseumDavenport -

Holistic Healing for Educators & Classrooms with Prairiewoods, Credit 1

Have the stressors of teaching, the pandemic, hybrid-learning, and daily life affected your personal happiness and well-being? Have you experienced difficulty finding time to engage in self-care activities that may help? In this one-hour credit course via Zoom, learn “microinterventions” to use daily to reset your brain and empower you to fully show up with a compassionate heart toward yourself, your students, your family and the world. Through practices of mindfulness, self-compassion and neuroscience, begin to restore holistic healing and build resiliency, joy, optimism and curiosity, leading to health and well-being. This online course with Prairiewoods is facilitated by Kim Seward, RN, BSN, CMI, and Ann Jackson, PBVM. It provides educators and any school or university staff with research-based theory, collaborative design and opportunities to practice. A text, Practicing Presence, is included in the registration fee. This first credit hour will be followed by credits 2 and 3 in the summer and fall of 2021. Credit 2 (June 23–25) will offer practices of mindfulness, self-compassion and neuroscience to develop a personal classroom toolkit for use with students. Deepening your own mindfulness and self-compassion skills will also be explored. Credit 3 (fall 2021) will invite collaboration to review outcomes, provide feedback and cite next steps. The cost is $35 per credit hour, paid to Grant Wood Area Education Agency. (Due to a generous donation by the Sisters of the Presentation, Dubuque, all additional costs will be covered!) Virtual Thursday Forum: What’s in Your Water? Water Quality in Iowa (and Beyond)

Maty St. Clair, Ben Peterson Professor of Chemistry

This Thursday Forum will explore the issue of water quality in Iowa. The forum will begin with a brief introduction to the history of water technology and regulation in the United States, including the Clean Water Act (1972) and Safe Drinking Water Act (1974). As a primarily agricultural state, Iowa’s most significant water quality issues include excess nutrients and bacteria. We will discuss the impacts of those pollutants on human health and the environment, examine efforts to assess the problem (including our own Coe Water Quality Lab) and review a recent lawsuit by Des Moines Water Works against drainage districts in northwestern Iowa. We also will assess the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy, Iowa’s plan to reduce the impact of its contribution to the Gulf of Mexico’s “dead zone.” Finally, we will take a look at other headline-grabbing water-quality issues with contaminants such as lead, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals”) and viruses, with an eye toward anticipating future developments.
2020-10-23 23:58:00 -05003/04/2112:00 a.m.Coe CollegeCedar Rapids -

Active Hope: Answering Earth’s Call for Transformative Healing & Loving Action Retreat with Prairiewoods

As Joanna Macy writes, “Active Hope is not wishful thinking. Active Hope is waking up to the beauty of life on whose behalf we can act. We belong to this world. The web of life is calling us forth at this time and we are here to play our part. Active Hope is a readiness to discover the strengths in ourselves and in others; a readiness to discover the reasons for hope and the occasions for love.” In this online retreat via Zoom, we will move through the spiral of The Work That Reconnects with the understanding that Earth is calling us to engage in transformative healing and loving action during these challenging times. Through our exploration, we will cultivate and strengthen our resilience to engage with COVID-19, the climate crisis, racial and environmental injustice, and overall anxiety in our lives. Joanna Macy–protege and Active Hope aficionada Kathleen Rude, author of the eco-mystical novel The Redemption of Red Fire Woman, will facilitate this 24-hour retreat. We will spend time online in community and offline in self-reflection (with time outside, if we’re able) to receive inspiration and healing for our weary, overwhelmed hearts and souls. In supportive and trustworthy space, we will honor our pain for the world, reconnect to active hope, and find clarity around how we can play a part in the healing of our communities and our beautiful planet. This online retreat is designed with lots of breaks, offline exercises and a lunch break. The workshop is highly interactive with ritual and sharing in pairs, small groups and full group conversations. It includes experiential practices, inspirational readings, singing and simple rituals. It’s engaging and invigorating and gives us tools for dealing with the challenges of living in difficult times. The cost of this online retreat is $150. She financed her drama education with loans secured by a “lifetime services contract.” If she defaults, her creditors will control every aspect of her life. Behind on her payments and facing foreclosure, Kira reluctantly accepts a large signing bonus to become a corporate gunfighter for TKC Insurance. After a year of training, she will take her place on the dueling fields that have become the final, lethal stop in the American legal system.

Putting her MFA in acting to work, Kira takes on the persona of a cold, intimidating gunslinger known as “Death’s Angel.” But just as she becomes the most feared gunfighter in TKC’s stable, she’s severely wounded during a duel on live video, shattering her aura of invincibility. A series of devastating setbacks follow, forcing Kira to face the truth about her life and what she’s become.

When the opportunity to fight another professional for a huge purse arises, Kira sees it as a chance to buy a new life . . . or die trying.

Structured around a chilling duel, Corporate Gunslinger is a modern satire that forces us to confront the growing inequalities in our society and our penchant for guns and bloodshed, as well as offering a visceral look at where we may be heading—far sooner than we know.

About Doug Engstrom
Doug Engstrom has been a farmer's son, a US Air Force officer, a technical writer, a computer support specialist, and a business analyst, as well as being a writer of speculative fiction.
