Glass Mosaic Coaster Workshop

Come join us at Kirkwood Community College and learn the ancient art of glass mosaics! Under the guidance from one of our local artists, you will plan, cut, and assemble your own glass coaster. The workshop will include an introduction to the art form, discussion of the project, colors available, and of course making your own timeless piece of art. When you have finished your work, the glass will be fired over the next week in one of our glass fusing kilns and will be ready to be picked up the following week during a scheduled time. Pick-up times and where to find your completed piece will be communicated to you by your instructor.

Registration is required prior to the class start date. If you have questions or would like to register, please visit www.kirkwood.edu/ce or contact 319-398-1022.

2021-01-18 15:00:00 -06002/06/2112:00 p.m.Kirkwood Community College, Arts and Theatre AnnexCedar Rapids -
Art Exhibit: Picking up the Pieces

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA.— Gilded Pear Gallery is excited to present Picking Up The Pieces, a solo exhibition of new sculptures and paintings by local artist, Kimberlee Rocca.

Kimberlee Rocca is an artist and designer currently residing in Solon, Iowa. She studied Design, Printmaking, and Fiber Arts at The University of Iowa before earning her BFA in Metal Smithing in 1991. During her studies, Rocca was introduced to Foil Imaging, a unique process which combines traditional printmaking techniques with commercial foil printing processes. She has spent over 30 years exploring this innovated medium on paper, metal and now, in this exhibit, with salvaged construction materials. In addition to her studio work she is locally recognized for her custom home designs in the Iowa City area with unique architectural features, sculptural elements, and mosaic installations. Rocca’s two-dimensional works and sculptural installations are included in collections of The University of Iowa Museum and Hospital Permanent art collections, The University of Missouri St. Louis, and Kirkwood Community College among other private collections.

About this exhibition:

“My job sites are filled with a myriad of common, yet unusual materials that continually spark my imagination and wiggle their way into my fine art works” says Rocca. “My two creative disciplines are intertwined, and I have found that I can barely do one without the other.” Rocca says that walking the sites is a part of her process. “I regularly scavenge through the tossed materials to discover unused treasures. I have generated a collection of raw wood, beams, stone, tile, paper, plastic, and metals that I can process with abandon because I know there will always be more discards. Due to certain limitations in home building which require simplicity in most cases, my artistry tends to run in the opposite direction with bold colors, wild shapes and intentional imperfections.”

Gilded Pear Gallery is located at 808 Third Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403. Release, Reset, Return: Rediscover Your Original Balance with Prairiewoods

Work, habit, injury, trauma, stress, and gravity all challenge our ability to stand tall, stay focused on the things we need and want to do, and participate fully in life. Traditional Chinese martial and healing arts offer methods for training ourselves to accept and engage life's challenges with strength, balance and grace. This is a four-week course (Feb. 3–24) offered via Zoom through Prairiewoods. We will learn methods for developing body awareness with the goal of rediscovering what the facilitator, Gerry Hopkins, calls our original balance, a state of optimal alignment, relaxation and focus. We will also learn a short Tai Chi form to practice maintaining this state as we move through this world. Gerry has practiced and studied martial arts for thirty-five years and taught Tai Chi and Qigong for seventeen. Before the Coronavirus, he facilitated workshops in a local prison as part of the Alternatives to Violence Project. In addition to learning from several masters of Chinese Martial arts, he has also studied with Paul Linden, Aikido Master and creator of Being in Movement. The cost is $20 to Prairiewoods for the four-week series. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2020-12-15 19:00:00 -06002/03/216:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
