Parenting Young Children: KIds-n-Canvas
<p>Kids-N-Canvas is a free, 6-week family learning group designed for families with young children. Each session begins with a family meal, followed by a caregiver session, and finished with a fun family art project. Mandala Drawing Workshop at Prairiewoods
<p>Come create with the Creator! Facilitator Andi Lewis will guide us to draw a beautiful mandala, or sacred circular work of art, simply using artist’s pens, drawing paper and a pencil for shading. Together we will learn about mandalas, including their spiritual significance throughout history. Then we’ll spend our time drawing in the contemplative setting at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha). We’ll each leave with a unique mandala that represents our spirit! HalloWEEKEND 2023
<p>Join us for a weekend of not-too-scary Halloween activities that kids of all ages will enjoy! Bats, spiders, pumpkins, and more will take over our exhibits during the spooky season and families can check out special Halloween activities on October 28th, 29th, and 31st (closed Monday).</p><p><em><b>Pirate Pete’s Trick-or-Treasure Takeover:</b> Our mascot, Pete, is wearing his pirate costume for Halloween this year and taking over the museum with spooky, swashbuckling fun! Build a sea-worthy ship in the blue room, make a pizza with treacherous toppings, and deposit gold doubloons at the bank. We’ll also have pirate training activities, a scallywag scavenger hunt, sea shanty sing-alongs, and so much more! </em></p><p>Costumes are encouraged (but not required)! Disguise yourself from the pirates or join Pete’s band of buccaneers. Our team will join the fun as well, so keep an eye out for dinosaurs, superheroes, and other silly characters.</p><p>All activities are included with museum admission. Sensory Friendly Halloween
<p>Join us for a special Halloween-themed Sensory Friendly Night! As part of our HalloWEEKEND activities, this free event offers sensory-friendly activities in a calmer environment and opportunities to collect treats in our museum exhibits.</p><p>Costumes are encouraged (but not required!) as you look for our “treat stations” throughout the museum. Trick-or-Treat at Marion City Hall
<p>Area princesses, superheroes, ghosts and goblins are invited to include a stop at Marion City Hall in their Halloween plans. The City of Marion will host a trick-or-treat event at City Hall (1225 6th Avenue) from 3-5 p.m. Children can dress up in their Halloween costumes and collect candy and other treats from staff on both floors at Marion City Hall. Jack SPLAT!
<p><strong>Don’t toss your Jack-O-Lanterns in the garbage—let us toss them from up high instead!</strong> This free outdoor event gives your carved creations one last hurrah for the Halloween season.</p><p>We will be throwing the pumpkins off the northwest corner of the parking ramp next to <a href="https://www.icgov.org/chauncey-swan-park">Chauncey Swan Park</a>. Drop off your ghoulish gourd and set up your blanket or lawn chairs nearby to get the best view. Come for the SPLATS, but stay for outdoor activities, jokes from Pete the Turtle, and some tasty treats. </p><p>Come watch the high-flying fun and enjoy a fall morning in the park!</p><p>Special thanks to our event sponsors, Little Village & PIP Marketing. Thank you as well to the City of Iowa City for helping us compost all the pumpkin pieces when the fun is over!</p><p><strong>HOW IT WORKS: </strong></p><ul><li aria-level="1">Pumpkin drop-off will start at 9:15 a.m. in Chauncey Swan Park on Saturday, November 4th </li><li aria-level="1">Activities will begin around 9:30</li><li aria-level="1">Pumpkin SPLATS will start at 10 am. All pumpkins will be dropped by our team.</li></ul><p><strong>PREP YOUR PUMPKIN:</strong></p><ul><li>Pumpkins must be gutted (this is Jack SPLAT, not Jack THUD).</li><li>Please remove candles, artificial lighting, or any other decorations that are in or attached to the pumpkin. This includes stickers, ribbons, and remnants of candle wax inside.</li><li>We compost Jack Splat pumpkins. Ones that have been painted or coated with a preserving sealant should not be added to a compost pile. Pumpkins coated with glitter should not be composted.</li></ul><p>Please inquire if you have any questions. We reserve the right to reject your pumpkin if it doesn’t meet our Jack Splat standards.</p><p><strong>WHERE TO GO:</strong></p><p>In addition to street parking, spots will be available in the <a href="https://www.icgov.org/chauncey-swan-park">Chauncey Swan ramp</a>, located at 415 E.
