Abstract Ideas: Abstract Art from the Collection

Culled from CRMA’s collection of works created after 1950, Abstract Ideas explores the potential of abstraction in the hands of post-World War II artists. In some cases, the subject matter has been only slightly abstracted, diverging only a little from the way they appear in nature. In other cases, artists have moved completely away from any recognizable object in pursuit of more emotional or intellectual goals. In all cases, however, artists maintained their relationship to and dialogue with the fundamental properties of art such as balance, form, line, color, and rhythm. Investigating the various degrees of abstraction found in modern paintings and sculpture, this exhibition presents a diverse group of works, each of which operates on different emotional and intellectual levels.
2022-07-31 16:00:00 -05007/31/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

BBQ Bash

BBQ Bash is a full weekend of delicious BBQ, bluesy music, and entertaining games for the whole family. Delicious smoked meats have been a staple of BBQ Bash each year, and the talented pitmasters at a local favorite, Pop’s BBQ, will prepare mouth-watering smoked meats, a delectable vegetarian option, and Pop’s tasty side dishes for ticketholders.

We plan to host both virtual and in-person BBQ Bash events in 2022. For those who wish to participate virtually, CHOMP Delivery will handle the pick-up or delivery of all meals. For folks who choose to join us in-person at the Johnson County Fairgrounds, our Friday night event will include live music, yard games, drinks, and—of course—those appetizing entrees and sides from Pop’s.
2022-02-03 20:00:00 -06009/23/225:00 p.m.Johnson County FairgroundsIowa City -
Tomas and Charlie Lasansky: An Artistic Marriage

Tomas and Charlie Lasansky: An Artistic Marriage

June 4, 2022-September 11, 2022

Tomas Lasansky, son of famed printmaker Mauricio Lasansky, and his wife Charlie have been lifelong artists living and working in Iowa City. While Tomas might be the more familiar of the two, Charlie, who has her own studio in the same building as her husband, is a significant artist in her own right. With two powerful artists working in close proximity to each other, they no doubt influence each other in subtle yet significant ways. This exhibition, the first two-person exhibition of their work, explores the potential relationships that exist. This exhibition will be accompanied by a significant retrospective catalogue, documenting each artist’s growth and development.
2022-03-18 16:00:00 -05006/04/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
