Adam Rake: World Lines

Adam Rake: World Lines

September 9, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Iowa City artist Adam Rake explores the complex ways in which the meaning of a work of art changes over time as technology and culture evolve. To convey this theme, Rake draws on the precedent of historical artworks but filters them through his own unique lens. He utilizes his printmaking experience to distort, alter, and augment the original images into something entirely new. Through these works, he considers the ever-changing relationship between contemporary culture and the work of art.
2023-09-29 16:00:00 -05009/29/23 @ 12:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Red Cedar Chamber Music: Retracted Retirement

Brahms took himself out of retirement to write this piece. The great composer Johannes Brahms briefly retired from composition in 1890 at the age of 57. However, after hearing clarinetist Richard Muhlfeld perform, he came out of retirement to write some of his greatest works, including his Clarinet Trio, two Clarinet Sonatas, and his Clarinet Quintet. The Quintet, an imposing four-movement work, is considered a masterpiece of composition and is central to the clarinet repertory. It is no wonder that our long-time friend Christine Bellomy has been asking us to perform this work for more than three decades. The program also includes Jewish Sketches Op. 12 by Alexander Krein, a colorful and spirited three-movement work. Core ensemble members violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian are joined by clarinetist Christine Bellomy, violinist Katie Wolfe, and violist Donghee Han in a program for string quartet and clarinet.

This series of concerts is made possible by the National Endowment for the Arts, Farmers State Bank, the City of Marion, AEGON Transamerica Foundation, the Giacoletto Foundation, the McIntyre Foundation, and the Grandon Foundation. Additional support comes from United Fire Group and Friends of Red Cedar Chamber Music.

Artist sponsorship is generously provided by Juanita Dennert.
2023-09-21 12:00:00 -05009/30/23 @ 11:00 a.m.Lisbon LibraryLisbon -

Awful Purdies, Abbie & the Sawyers and The Night Lights, with Deb Talan, will bring to the stage songs for the heart and soul, reflecting their lived experiences as mothers, friends, women, artists and activists.

Awful Purdies

Awful Purdies is a Folk-Americana collective of five multi-instrumental women, powered by seamless harmonies, banjo, accordion, cello, guitar, mandolin, and bass. The sound is an earnest nod to traditional American music, folk, old country, bluegrass, honky tonk, and soul. The live performance experience is intimate, containing both humor and insight. On stage, Awful Purdies actively share gratitude and support of one another and take turns stepping up as lead singers and songwriters. Since 2006, Awful Purdies have been raising families, telling women’s stories, advocating for human rights, and engaging with their communities in Eastern Iowa

Abbie & the Sawyers

Think folksy swoons and harmonic ditties, with playful melodic (and lyrical) range. Abbie & the Sawyers make songs that feel warm, whether it's an uptempo summer dance-along or a slow ode to night spent with someone you love. As described by dsm Magazine, their “unique blend of backwoods Appalachia and Midwest charm creates a sound that is stunningly intimate.

The Night Lights

The Diplomettes from Diplomats of Solid Sound banded together to create lush, harmony-driven feely folk at Golden Bear Studio in Des Moines. These long-time friends and bandmates' original songs tell stories about motherhood, personal evolution and friendship

Deb Talan

Deb Talan has been writing songs since she was 14 years old. Granted, her style has changed a bit since writing the forever-unknown smash-hit “Through the Window” about feeling numb, like life was going on somewhere out there but not accessible to her (at 14. so jaded.) She played clarinet, wrote songs on piano, later taught herself to play guitar in college, got obsessed with Shawn Colvin, was a vegetarian for 4 years, ended that with a hotdog and a swim in lake Michigan, started a band in Portland, OR with her friend Mark, named it Hummingfish, wrote a lot of fun songs that people danced to ‘til they were all sweaty in that hipster/grungy/geeky Northwest kind of way, moved back to the east coast 6 years and a divorce later and began playing solo in Boston coffee houses (read: 4 different Starbucks that she also poured espresso at) opened shows for Catie Curtis (a songwriter hero of hers) met up with Steve Tannen and formed The Weepies, played shows all over the country and the world, toured in a real tourbus! moved to LA, got married to Steve, made 5 records and 3 amazing boy-children together with him, had songs placed in loads of movies and tv shows, moved to Iowa, got breast cancer, got chemotherapy and relied heavily on marijuana for pain and nausea relief(Legalize, for gods’ sakes, can we grow up as a country, please?) recovered from breast cancer, made a solo album, struggled with mental health issues (Childhood Incest Survivor, lucky to be alive, music has helped, and so have many blessed healers) and relationship issues for 6 years, got divorced from Steve. She has a lot she could say these days. She prefers to listen. But playing songs for people is a close second. Music heals. Songs can be prayers. Deb Talan is some lovely damn proof of that.
2023-09-19 05:00:00 -050010/01/23 @ 3:30 p.m.Englert TheatreIowa City -

Tremble Clefs was founded in Scottsdale, AZ in 1994 and is expanding to Iowa City to engage the PD community in music therapy and social support. The loss of voice, communication difficulties resulting in a decreased volume of voice and lung capacity, and depression are the common symptoms of PD. This weekly program will provide vocal, breathing, and movement exercises that benefit the participants to meet their specific needs in PD and create a supportive and therapeutic environment for the individuals with PD and their caregivers. Sun Joo Lee, a board-certified music therapist and a director of Tremble Clef, AZ, who has been leading the group since 2008, will facilitate the program in Iowa City. We welcome anyone with Parkinson’s, along with their spouse, caregivers, and extended family members. No musical experience or background is required to participate in the program.

2023-10-03 16:00:00 -050010/03/23 @ 12:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
International Speed Friendshipping

Tuesday, October 3, 4:00 pm

Location: Assembly Room

In honor of the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, celebrated each year on October 1, ICSC will host an afternoon of speed "friendshipping" with an emphasis on making international connections. Everyone is welcome, and we’re extending a special invitation to those who were born outside of the United States or lived abroad for a number of years. Using a speed dating format (but for making friends rather than dating), participants will have a chance to meet and chat with community members, have some fun, and maybe even take the first step in creating new and lasting friendships. The event will start with a group icebreaker activity, shift to timed 1:1 conversations, and wrap up with open socializing and refreshments.
2023-09-08 17:00:00 -050010/03/23 @ 4:00 p.m.Iowa City Senior CenterIowa City -
Hey Buddy, I'm Bill

On display now in the Main Library Gallery, University of Iowa Libraries:

Hey Buddy, I’m Bill tells the story of Bill Sackter, the namesake of Wild Bill’s (formerly Wild Bill’s Coffee Shop) in the University of Iowa School of Social Work. From his early life in Minneapolis to his 44-year institutionalization for an intellectual disability to his years of friends and fame in Iowa City, the exhibit shares a glimpse into Bill’s life and legacy.
