Art Exhibit: Keeping the Bubble Happy

Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present "Keeping the Bubble Happy", a solo exhibit of new works by Mary Zeran.

This show investigates the idea that we all possess our inner world in relation to the external- our bubble. The works featured are a response to keeping both of these in equilibrium; the artist illustrates her personal reflection to what that means with color, movement, texture and composition. “I structure my world around a system of patterns and habits to create a psychological ecosystem that allows me to transcend my sadness, fears, insecurities, and doubts”, says Zeran. Painterly organic shapes and patterned blocks are affixed together in chaotic harmony. “I am a participant in the collaboration with the material and my atmosphere is airy within dense and transparent layers, focusing on interactions with the natural world around me.” As she abstracts flowers, trees, and the colors of nature, she uses this language to bring her closer to her family’s craft traditions while exploring her own internal voice. Exhibiting works are largely displayed on panel and paper and include her signature “object” renderings.

Mary Zeran received her B.F.A and M.F.A from University of Iowa. She was born in Iowa City in 1964 and now lives and works in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Unwrapped: Gifts from the Peter Norton Family Christmas Project, 1988-2018

Retired computer entrepreneur Peter Norton (Norton Antivirus Software) is a contemporary art collector as well as an active participant in various civic and philanthropic activities. In 1988, the Norton Family Christmas Project began commissioning artists to create original, multiple-edition works that were mailed as holiday greetings to friends, colleagues, and selected institutions. In 2017, the CRMA received the bulk of these wonderful holiday greetings from Director Emeritus Terry Pitts and his wife Kathy Hall.

The objects and artists’ books that comprise the Project collection are incredibly varied. A sense of whimsy runs through many of the pieces: salt and pepper shakers become snow globes, a music box exhorts us to be silent. Many works also have a sociopolitical focus, addressing issues as varied as slavery, AIDS, and gender identity. Taken together, the Norton Family Christmas Project objects and artists’ books provide a wonderful snapshot of the last thirty years of activity in the art world at large, presenting the work of both emerging and more established artists. The 2018 edition of the Norton Family Christmas Project was the last and ended the series.

2019-12-12 20:00:00 -060012/12/1912:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

2019-12-13 16:00:00 -060012/13/1912:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
