Women in Interfaith Dialogue with Prairiewoods
<p>Come together quarterly via Zoom with women of various faith traditions for conversations about faith and spirituality. This group meets quarterly through Prairiewoods and is facilitated by Angie Pierce Jennings, Virginia Melroy, Dr. Paula Sanchini and Mary Beth Siemann. In January, we will talk about the trees we’ve known and loved throughout our lives, as well as our spiritual connection with trees personally and within our faith traditions. Release, Reset, Return: Rediscover Your Original Balance with Prairiewoods
<p>Work, habit, injury, trauma, stress, and gravity all challenge our ability to stand tall, stay focused on the things we need and want to do, and participate fully in life. Traditional Chinese martial and healing arts offer methods for training ourselves to accept and engage life's challenges with strength, balance and grace. This is a four-week course (Feb. 3–24) offered via Zoom through Prairiewoods. We will learn methods for developing body awareness with the goal of rediscovering what the facilitator, Gerry Hopkins, calls our original balance, a state of optimal alignment, relaxation and focus. We will also learn a short Tai Chi form to practice maintaining this state as we move through this world. Gerry has practiced and studied martial arts for thirty-five years and taught Tai Chi and Qigong for seventeen. Before the Coronavirus, he facilitated workshops in a local prison as part of the Alternatives to Violence Project. In addition to learning from several masters of Chinese Martial arts, he has also studied with Paul Linden, Aikido Master and creator of Being in Movement. Richard Blais
<p>Richard Blais is a successful chef, restaurateur, James Beard nominated cookbook author and television personality. Perhaps most recognizable as the winner of Bravo’s <em>Top Chef All-Stars</em>, Blais went on to graduate from the Culinary Institute of America and train at The French Laundry, Daniel, Chez Panisse, and el Bulli. He is a partner at San Diego’s acclaimed restaurant Juniper & Ivy and multiple locations of The Crack Shack, his rapidly expanding fried chicken and egg concept. Blais currently owns and operates Trail Blais, a forward-thinking culinary company that has consulted on, designed, and operated multiple popular eateries. Trail Blais has opened concepts in Columbus, Ohio; Atlanta, Georgia; and St. Louis, Missouri and will be announcing new restaurant projects throughout 2020. Blais is the James Beard Award-nominated author of <em>Try This at Home: Recipes from My Head to Your Plate</em>, as well as his second cookbook, <em>So Good</em>. He frequently makes appearances on such hit Food Network shows as <em>Guy’s Grocery Games</em>, <em>Next Food Network Star</em> and <em>Cooks vs. Cons</em>, to name just a few. Holistic Healing for Educators & Classrooms with Prairiewoods, Credit 1
<p>Have the stressors of teaching, the pandemic, hybrid-learning, and daily life affected your personal happiness and well-being? Have you experienced difficulty finding time to engage in self-care activities that may help? In this one-hour credit course via Zoom, learn “microinterventions” to use daily to reset your brain and empower you to fully show up with a compassionate heart toward yourself, your students, your family and the world. Through practices of mindfulness, self-compassion and neuroscience, begin to restore holistic healing and build resiliency, joy, optimism and curiosity, leading to health and well-being. This online course with Prairiewoods is facilitated by Kim Seward, RN, BSN, CMI, and Ann Jackson, PBVM. It provides educators and any school or university staff with research-based theory, collaborative design and opportunities to practice. A text, <em>Practicing Presence,</em> is included in the registration fee. This first credit hour will be followed by credits 2 and 3 in the summer and fall of 2021. Credit 2 (June 23–25) will offer practices of mindfulness, self-compassion and neuroscience to develop a personal classroom toolkit for use with students. Deepening your own mindfulness and self-compassion skills will also be explored. Credit 3 (fall 2021) will invite collaboration to review outcomes, provide feedback and cite next steps. Metta Yoga with Prairiewoods
<p>Experience the healing powers of meditative yoga from the spiritual environment and natural beauty of Prairiewoods via Zoom. Join us as we link our movements with our breath and cultivate strength, flexibility and relaxation through regular hatha-style yoga classes. RYT-200 Hour Certified Yoga Alliance Instructors Carla Brems and Heather English offer Gentle/Beginner’s Yoga (Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30–10:30 a.m.). People of all fitness levels and abilities are encouraged to participate whenever available. Carla Brems enjoys teaching hatha-style yoga so that all feel welcome and safe to appreciate and enjoy the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that yoga can bring. Heather English began practicing yoga for the mental health benefits and became a yoga instructor in order to share these amazing benefits with others. Heather is inspired by the potential that a regular yoga practice has for impacting so many areas of life. In fact, it was her yoga training that motivated her to begin crafting as a career, to share her crafting with others, and to regularly explore the intersection of yoga and creativity. Tubular Herringbone Bracelet through Kirkwood
<p>Learn or hone your tubular herringbone skills to create this slightly undulating bracelet. Varied sizes of Toho beads and colors will be stitched to accentuate the ins and outs of the pattern. Your beading will go faster than you think, as you will be stitching 2 beads at a time. No experience needed.</p><p><em>Registration is through Kirkwood Community College. Register at:</em></p><p><a href="http://www.kirkwood.edu">www.kirkwood.edu</a><em> and go to Continuing Education and then search for Beadology Iowa under the instructor search.
