Roadkill Confidential

Sheila Callaghan's Roadkill Confidential is a wild ride on at least two different paths. Community Music Day

Community Music Day is coming back to the Cedar Rapids Public Library!

The third annual Community Music Day will be held on Saturday, March 4. The full-day event is free of charge to all and includes performances from local musicians of all ages, an instrument petting zoo, a music production workshop, musical story time, arts and crafts, and more. Organized by Harmony School in partnership with the Cedar Rapids Public Library, Community Music Day is a celebration of all of the rich culture of music that eastern Iowa has to offer.

“Community Music Day is a beloved tradition for us,” said Harmony School of Music director Jessica Altfillisch. “It’s about putting aside our differences and our worries for a day and just enjoying making music together. This year will be extra special because it is the first time we’ve been able to come together like this since the pandemic.”

Traditional activities including infant and preschool music classes, musical storytime, student performances, crafts, and instrument petting zoos will be available. A new feature will be workshops on music production.

In the afternoon, Harmony School students and teaching artists will invite all community members to join in a massive play and sing along. The day will end with a mainstage performance (artist announcement coming soon).

Harmony School of Music was founded in 2017 to break down barriers to music education. They offer free intensive after school orchestra programs in a safe and loving environment to all students in grades 3-8. Community Music Day is part of Harmony School’s mission to support opportunities for students to be a positive force in their community.
2023-01-03 20:00:00 -06003/04/239:00 a.m.Cedar Rapids Public LibraryCedar Rapids -
Trio Less Traveled: Red Cedar Chamber Music

Red Cedar Chamber Music’s directors and core ensemble, violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian, are joined by violinist Amos Fayette for a program of music for two violins and cello. The standard string trio is violin, viola, cello. The less common trio, two violins and cello, has fewer works written for it. The program opens with a charming Boccherini Sonata. Next, Fayette will take the lead in Bach’s Sonata #4 for Violin and Harpsichord Obligato, given the Red Cedar treatment here with Miera playing the right hand of the keyboard part and Carey playing the left. Jan Boland’s newly published Flower Sonatas by Oswald for two trebles and bass give us a different and mildly celtic baroque flavor. The largest work on the program is Dvorak’s Terzetto, originally written for two violins and viola, it is presented here with the cello part arranged by Red Cedar. The concert concludes by paying homage to the “missing” trio member, the viola. Michael Kimber’s work Violas on Fire! will bring the concert to an exhuberant close.

Miera and Carey first played chamber music with Amos just before they became the Directors of Red Cedar and have looked forward to having him as a guest artist. Comfortable with a wide range of styles, his flexibility fits beautifully with Red Cedar’s diverse programming. While the pandemic delayed his appearance, it also brought him closer to Iowa than New Jersey. Amos is currently the Manager of Community Partnerships and Engagement at The Cleveland Institute of Music and continues to concertize regularly.

Eight performances of this program will be presented between February 22 and 26 with Rural Outreach reaching audiences in Monticello and Tipton, a public concert at Lowe Park in Marion, and three Music for Seniors events. This series of concerts is made possible by the Program Support and Linn County Funds of the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, the McIntyre Foundation, the Grandon Foundation, the Giacoletto Foundation, AEGON Transamerica Foundation, the City of Marion, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support comes from CRST International, United Fire Group, Hills Bank, Farmers State Bank, GreatAmerica Financial Services, and Friends of Red Cedar Chamber Music.

Artist sponsorship is generously provided by Juanita Dennert.
2/24/237:00 p.m.First United Church of ChristTipton -
