Ragged Blade Band Music Performance

African-American Composers

Black composers were on the forefront of American popular music; ragtime itself was the combination of African syncopation over a European march beat and formed the basis for the development of blues and jazz. Growing up as the children of former slaves, many black composers and musicians had to navigate – and even perpetuate – racism in popular entertainment as they grew their careers.

We’ll look at composers such as Shelton Brooks and Scott Joplin, and also some leaders in their field such as W.C. Handy, “father of the blues,” and Ernest Hogan, “father of ragtime,” who was the first African-American to both produce and star in a Broadway show.

Cherry and Jerry's hour long program will feature ragtime, blues, jazz and Broadway. The duo presented “Hits of the Ragtime Era” at the Hiawatha Library earlier this year; let’s welcome them back this October!

“Cherry & Jerry” is Isaac Cherry on percussion and Jerry Rabushka on piano; they focus mainly on music from 1900-1920: ragtime, early blues and jazz, and popular songs.

Based in St. Louis, Missouri, the duo is also part of the larger “Ragged Blade Band,” and has toured music of the ragtime era throughout Missouri and regionally, appearing at baseball games, steampunk events, pubs and restaurants, special events, and more. In 2021, their African-American Composers presentation reached around the world as part of Black History Month in both Australia and England. They recently presented a ragtime history program at the Missouri History Museum. A typical performance includes some well-known songs of the early 20th century as well breathing life back into some rarely played tunes.
2022-06-29 14:00:00 -050010/15/221:00 p.m.Hiawatha Public LibraryHiawatha -

Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II

Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian, examines the complicated history and impact of Executive Order 9066 that led to the incarceration of 75,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry and 45,000 Japanese nationals following the attack on Pearl Harbor. Young and old lived crowded together in hastily built camps, endured poor living conditions, and were under the constant watch of military guards for two and a half years. Meanwhile, brave Japanese American men risked their lives fighting for the United States. Some 40 years later, members of the Japanese American community led the nation to confront the wrong it had done—and urged Congress to make it right. Women’s Mindfulness & Yoga Retreat at Prairiewoods

Yoga is a healing modality for self-realization, showing how we can progress along life’s journey by opening to our Divine Nature. Mindfulness calls on us to literally stop and wake up to exactly how things actually are right now, with self-kindness, which can be deeply healing and transformative. Come to Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) in the spirit of interconnectedness and receptivity to create a deliberate pause for self-reflection. Facilitator Allison Peet will guide us to explore gentle hatha yoga, yoga nidra, various mindfulness meditations, mandala drawing, breath-focused practice, loving kindness and self-compassion practice. There will be periods of silence offered, as well as time for reflection and inquiry. All scheduled activities are optional and plenty of time and space will be offered for personal rest on your own to return home refreshed, connected and renewed. Some experience with gentle yoga and meditation is preferred. Allison Peet is a certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Instructor trained at UMass Center for Mindfulness, founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., and the Mindfulness Center at Brown University. She is a certified Buteyko Breathing Method coach and registered yoga instructor (RYT200). She’s taught since 2015 and hundreds have graduated from her MBSR program. Based on a pre and post self-evaluation, 84% of grads lowered their perceived stress and reduced stress levels an average of 35%. Allison attends week-long or more silent meditation retreats and has a regular practice. The cultivation of mindfulness transformed her relationship with stress and anxiety, which inspired her to start her own business, From Within Wellness, to benefit others. The cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions and all meals. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
8/19/226:30 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -
