Art Exhibit: Keeping the Bubble Happy

Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present "Keeping the Bubble Happy", a solo exhibit of new works by Mary Zeran.

This show investigates the idea that we all possess our inner world in relation to the external- our bubble. The works featured are a response to keeping both of these in equilibrium; the artist illustrates her personal reflection to what that means with color, movement, texture and composition. “I structure my world around a system of patterns and habits to create a psychological ecosystem that allows me to transcend my sadness, fears, insecurities, and doubts”, says Zeran. Painterly organic shapes and patterned blocks are affixed together in chaotic harmony. “I am a participant in the collaboration with the material and my atmosphere is airy within dense and transparent layers, focusing on interactions with the natural world around me.” As she abstracts flowers, trees, and the colors of nature, she uses this language to bring her closer to her family’s craft traditions while exploring her own internal voice. Exhibiting works are largely displayed on panel and paper and include her signature “object” renderings.

Mary Zeran received her B.F.A and M.F.A from University of Iowa. She was born in Iowa City in 1964 and now lives and works in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Museum collections include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, and Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, Cedar Rapids IA.

She is the recipient of several awards and honors and her works are in numerous public and private collections as well as many notable corporate collections. Saturdays at the Stanley: Get Cozy at the Stanley

Put on your comfy clothes and snuggle up. Join us for an afternoon of hygge, the Danish word for coziness, comfort, and well-being, especially important in the winter months. Director Lauren Lessing will guide visitors through some of the coziest works in the collection to help us embrace the comforting possibilities cold winter afternoons can offer.

Saturdays at the Stanley brings the museum’s collection to audiences in a casual, fun, and interactive atmosphere. Each event has a theme that looks at our artwork from a different perspective. Curators lead visitors through a selection of works, share stories about the artists and subject matter, and open the discussion up to the audience. We invite visitors of all ages to participate in these conversations and get (re)acquainted with our collection as we look forward to the opening of our new building!

2019-2020 Saturdays at the Stanley events are sponsored in part by Little Village.
12/14/192:00 p.m.University of Iowa Stanley Museum of ArtIowa City -
Cornell College Theatre Production: The Spitfire Grill

By Fred Alley, James Valcq, and Lee David Zlotoff; directed by Caroline Price. A feisty parolee follows her dreams, based on a page from an old travel book, to a small town in Wisconsin and finds a place for herself working at Hannah's Spitfire Grill. It is for sale but there are no takers for the only eatery in the depressed town, so newcomer Percy suggests to Hannah that she raffle it off. Entry fees are one hundred dollars and the best essay on why you want the grill wins. Soon, mail is arriving by the wheelbarrow full and things are definitely cookin' at the Spitfire Grill.

From the New York Times: "A soul satisfying … work of theatrical resourcefulness. A compelling story that flows with grace and carries the rush of anticipation. The story moves, the characters have many dimensions and their transformations are plausible and moving. The musical is freeing. It is penetrated by honesty and it glows."
2/29/207:30 p.m.First Street Community CenterMount Vernon
