Love Letters

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards and continues through a lifetime.

Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years-where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of "good schools." While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved and it makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave to, each other over the years-physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be.
2021-03-24 15:30:00 -05004/18/212:00 p.m.Waterloo Community PlayhouseWaterloo -
Seriously Funny: American Gothic Parodies

The fact that thousands of parodies of American Gothic exist, dating back several decades, speaks to the enduring inspiration of one of America’s greatest works of art. Art Exhibit: Polyphonous 2021-Mimetic Lives II

Gilded Pear Gallery is thrilled to present an inaugural concurrent exhibition, Polyphonous 2021: Mimetic Lives II, a 2-person display of new jewelry works by local artists, Satomi Kawai and Jillian Moore.

The collective, Polyphonous, was founded by Professor Jivan Astfalck, Rachel Darbourne and Laura Bradshaw-Heap, loosely grouped through connections at the School of Jewellery in Birmingham, England, but members are from multiple countries- including U.S. based artists Satomi Kawai and Jillian Moore. Established in 2018, Polyphonous was formed in collaboration with Studio Gabi Green in Munich’s West End with the intent to drive visitors to a localized hive during Munich Jewellery Week; one of many prominent features of the program. Both in the wake and the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 has offered the opportunity to safely connect with the most renowned European jewellery event from across the globe, online, and in print with Current Obsession. Artists and venues throughout the world unravel the dilemma to present significant and innovative displays of work in the field of contemporary jewelry at mass scale. This exhibition effectively serves as an in-person experience for the residents of the American Midwest and links virtually to other physical and virtual celebrations around the world.

In 2006, Kawai and Moore exhibited “Mimetic of Life”, a display of graduate work from the University of Iowa’s Fine Arts program. That show, unknowingly, initiated a long-standing partnership of presenting work together. This marks a 15th anniversary for the two, in a way, and reunites them in an exclusively shared exhibition for the first time in more than a decade. “Mimetic Lives II” portrays the artists’ unique parallels in jewelry fashion form: earrings, brooches, rings and the like. Mimesis (meaning to mimic or imitate), is a perfect one-word summary of their creative inspirations and helps define the conversation between their work over the years. The individual lines of work stand alone with clear material polarity. They however borrow certain motifs inherent to their abstracted ideations rooted in biology and natural elements.

Through our own physical reflection, we are presented with a flipped perspective on a familiar and known image. This type of mirroring can be observed in the paired styles of the artists’ works: glossy, amorphous, and prismatic; matte, achromatic, and structured. The same characteristics however remain integral and constant: repetitive pattern, arduous detail, and the uncanny attraction to something that looks memorable. Each artist pulls from natural wonders in our world to fabricate a small token for adornment.

Gallery operations during the COVID-19 pandemic:

Private viewing appointments can be made by contacting the gallery via email or phone. Meet the Author - Peter Looney

Join us for a FB Live event featuring Peter Looney!

From Peter:
When I was a little kid growing up on the farm, the eight of us would pile into the car and make the occasional special trip into Cedar Rapids. Picture a skinny little kid, on an older sister's lap, nose pressed up against the car window, gazing in wonder at the tall buildings. And look at all these people – there must be HUNDREDS of them!

Later, as an adult living in Cedar Rapids with my own family, I'd wonder about all the landmarks I kept hearing about – the Majestic, the Allison, the Montrose, the Masonic Temple, the Union Depot, Star Wagon – where had they been? Where did they go? What's there now?

That island in the middle of the river, in the heart of downtown – why are there buildings on it? Did there REALLY used to be a roller coaster on it? I'd hear about this outdoor movie theater, only it was a walk-in, not a drive-in. And all these other grand old theaters, and crazy dance halls, and magnificent hotels, and I'd hear people talk about four different amusement parks, and five different racetracks. Where were they, and when were they there, and WHERE DID THEY GO???

So I started collecting old pictures that I'd come across, in newspapers, magazines, books, and eventually, on the internet. I'd study them with a magnifying glass. I made lists of those old places, and their addresses, and the years they were there, and what was there before them, and what is there now. Followed by hundreds and hundreds of hours probing and researching old newspapers, phone books, and city directories, to find accurate dates of existence and operation... resulting in a book, Lost Cedar Rapids.
4/20/216:30 p.m.The History CenterCedar Rapids -

Seriously Funny: American Gothic Parodies

Grant Wood’s American Gothic is probably the world’s most parodied American painting, second only to Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. The fact that thousands of parodies of American Gothic exist, dating back several decades, speaks to the enduring inspiration of one of America’s greatest works of art. This exhibition—a first for the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art—will look at many of these parodies—some in the flesh on the gallery’s walls and many others digitally projected in an attempt to share the incredible reach of this iconic painting. From Bill and Hillary Clinton to Leonardo and Mona Lisa to RuPaul as male and female, these parodies speak to how this one painting serves as the basis for looking at various contemporary people and issues. Wood’s impactful 1930 painting continues to inspire “artists” of all ages and skills in a playful and humorous way that Wood would no doubt have applauded.
2021-04-25 16:00:00 -05004/25/2112:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Women of Ragtime

Women of Ragtime

Women ragtime composers faced challenges – it wasn’t considered very “ladylike” to write this kind of music, and once they got married, they were expected to give up their career and raise a family. Still, a surprising amount of ragtime was written by young women, and much of it was very successful in its time. We’ll share some music by May Aufderheide, the Indiana composer who is considered the best of the female composers; Charlotte Blake of Detroit, who was known not only for ragtime but also for popular songs; and Irene Giblin, who got her start demonstrating sheet music in a St. Louis department store. Along with that were some famous singers; vaudeville performer Sophie Tucker had an unusual rag written especially for her.

“Cherry & Jerry” is Isaac Cherry on percussion and Jerry Rabushka on piano. Based in St. Louis, the duo is also part of the larger “Ragged Blade Band,” and has toured music of the ragtime era throughout several states.

This program will be via Zoom. Registration is required to get the Zoom link.
