Rooted Emergence: Spiritual Operating Systems 2.0 Retreat at Prairiewoods

We are aware of life emerging, changing, and regenerating all around and within us. Our understanding of who "We" are is shifting. Humanity is on the cusp of a new ontology (nature of being) and a spiritual renaissance. Biologically, we are merged more and more with technology, truly becoming cybernetic organisms—"cyborgs." Some are quite comfortable with the merger, especially those called "digital natives." What if we were born prior to digital immersion, struggling to connect with those whose lives flourish in the tech milieu? How do we understand our deeper, interior selves, and our evolving relationships? What does spirituality look like in this context? A new "spiritual operating system 2.0" may be required. We are collectively and gradually marking a transition to a "spiritual, but not religious" world. Our pandemic-era religious gatherings have morphed into pixelated squares on a screen, our rituals appearing as two-dimensional images without taste, smell or texture. We are learning to adapt and make meaning in this new context. Maybe our daily meditations come from an email alert. Maybe our rituals are focused on breath and embodied energy, and our prayer is in rhythm with the changing seasons. Expediency in communication—the text—has supplanted most other forms for daily interaction. Can emojis communicate the depths of loss or the vibrancy of life? How does symbol and metaphor in our relanguaging process help us co-create emerging spiritual meaning? And what about our moral compass in this "post-human" era? What if terms like "the common good" escape us, but the topic of AI (artificial intelligence) rights enters our ethical consideration? Join facilitators Ellen Bruckner and Laura A. Weber, Ph.D., at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) in going deeper into the mystery of rooted emergence, our journey of interior awareness in today's complex world. The either-or structure of binary programming may leave us feeling a deep void, and exhausted from being always "on." We may feel like we are drowning in a sea of zeros and ones, without the grayscale, the nuance of richly varied life experience. It can be felt as an overload to our neurological, emotional and spiritual selves. How might we remain rooted, while our spiritual taproots and mycelial networking systems move through the life cycle of composting and regenerating, garnering nourishment from many new sources? On this weekend odyssey, we will take a first fierce step. Friday evening will find us exploring personal and communal stories that have grounded us spiritually. As we listen to the wisdom of ancient traditions, we will note the generative wellsprings of our common roots and trace their sources. Celebrating our rootedness, we will engage Saturday morning's reflection on the nature of "roots" as an analogy for organic growth, malleability and dynamism in the spiritual life. Saturday afternoon will offer an experiential exercise to hone and deepen our awareness, creativity and integration of many sources of spiritual nourishment, from what we perceive and how we interact with the expressions of emergent spirituality in our midst. Finally, Sunday morning will help us unveil what is emerging in respect to our vulnerabilities and our freedoms as we experience this unprecedented time of spiritual awareness and growth. Ready to make the leap? This is "one small step" for each of us, and "one giant leap" for all of us, the wider “We.” The cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday lunch. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2/24/236:30 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

Web-Weaving: Pre-Launch Study Series for Spirituality in the 21st Century at Prairiewoods

Together, let's begin tilling the soil and rooting ourselves for Spirituality in the 21st Century 2023 with Jeremy Lent (coming April 28–29, 2023). We will begin with the six parts of Jeremy's book The Web of Meaning. Six essential questions for the wider “We” include: Who Am I? Where Am I? What Am I? How Should I Live? Why Am I? and Where Are We Going? These are six essential questions for the spiritual sojourner embedded in the great web of life. Jeremy's work in Liology, a world-view for sustainable flourishing, will help us tap into the web of meaning with our full sensorium, with an eye toward integration and wholeness. Living in the midst of post-humanism and the technological mayhem of constant (superficial and mis-) information overload, this series will challenge all of us to delve deeper, opening us to the questions that matter for the "We" we're becoming. We are seeking communal wisdom to help prepare for the Spirituality in the 21st Century event in April by hosting these critical conversations. This is a six-part series (Jan. 10, Jan. 17, Jan. 24, Jan. 31, Feb. 7 and Feb. 21) at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) with facilitators Ellen Bruckner and Laura A. Weber, Ph.D., cohosts of Prairiewoods’ Go Deeper Thursdays. This is an invitation to come together and explore together the topics that define us. We welcome your participation, either for one or two sessions or for all of them. You may find Jeremy’s book The Web of Meaning helpful in these conversations. (Copies are available at Prairiewoods or online.) You also may want to visit his website (https://www.jeremylent.com/) or watch this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Zjr2hAIYGE&t=326s) for background information. The cost is $10 per session, or $50 for the six-session series. For more information or to register, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
2023-02-21 17:00:00 -06002/21/234:00 p.m.Prairiewoods Franciscan Spirituality CenterHiawatha -

Art Exhibit: "Ancient Healing Properties" by Mary Zeran

This exhibition marks a turning point in Zeran’s artwork- an introduction to her ceramic sculptures and a fresh path in her paintings; working in monoprinting, collage, and her signature acrylic work on duralar. She says of the new work: ” I create places of happiness. Landscapes where you can rest your soul. Not any old places, but locations unknown; full of delicious color, long expanses, odd quirky shapes, and patterns. Not linear moments, but an abstracted experience you can’t quite define.” Mary Zeran was raised in a family of women artists whose textiles, embroidery, and woodcarvings, existed as their visual language; enigmatic shapes and forms were their words. Each time she picks up a brush or scissors she immerses herself in the language of her family, which brings her ever closer to their traditions, histories, and stories. Mary Zeran received her B.F.A and M.F.A from University of Iowa. She was born in Iowa City in 1964 and now lives and works in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She is the recipient of several awards and honors and her works are in numerous public and private collections as well as many notable corporate collections. Her collage works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad including the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art; Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art, in Kansas City; SOIL Gallery in Seattle; Higher Art Gallery in Michigan; and Chaing Mai University in Chaing Mai, Thailand.

www.gildedpeargallery.com/ancient-healing
2023-02-08 17:00:00 -06002/08/2310:00 a.m.Gilded Pear GalleryCedar Rapids -
