Dick Pinney (1924-1996) was a long-time favorite in the Cedar Rapids art scene. Accomplished in many media, this former creative director for Stamats Communications and Coe College vice president was perhaps most famous for the numerous carved wood assemblages that he created, usually as commissions for area business leaders. Paintings, drawings, ceramics, assemblages, constructions, games, and puppets were all part of Pinney’s repertoire. Abstract Ideas: Abstract Art from the Collection

Culled from CRMA’s collection of works created after 1950, Abstract Ideas explores the potential of abstraction in the hands of post-World War II artists. In some cases, the subject matter has been only slightly abstracted, diverging only a little from the way they appear in nature. In other cases, artists have moved completely away from any recognizable object in pursuit of more emotional or intellectual goals. In all cases, however, artists maintained their relationship to and dialogue with the fundamental properties of art such as balance, form, line, color, and rhythm. Investigating the various degrees of abstraction found in modern paintings and sculpture, this exhibition presents a diverse group of works, each of which operates on different emotional and intellectual levels.
2022-08-04 20:00:00 -05008/04/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Art Lovers Book Club: Blue Arabesque: A Search for the Sublime by Patricia Hampl

Just out of college, Patricia Hampl was mesmerized by a Matisse painting she saw in the Art Institute of Chicago: an aloof woman gazing at goldfish in a bowl, a mysterious Moroccan screen behind her. This woman seemed a welcome secular version of the nuns of Hampl’s girlhood, free and untouchable, a poster girl for twentieth-century feminism. In Blue Arabesque, Hampl explores the allure of that woman, immersed in leisure, so at odds with the increasing rush of the modern era. Her tantalizing meditation takes us to the Cote d’Azur and North Africa, from cloister to harem, pondering figures as diverse as Eugène Delacroix, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Katherine Mansfield. Returning always to Matisse and his obsessive portraits of languid women, Hampl discovers they were not decorative indulgences but surprising acts of integrity.
2022-03-17 17:00:00 -05008/18/224:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
