Juneteenth and Emancipation

On June 19, 1865, Union Soldiers arrived in Texas and spread the word that they were officially free. This information moved so slowly through the south that slaves in Texas did not received this information until over two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. In order to really understand the impact of this moment, we will look at the impact of slavery on the United States. Many communities celebrate through parades, festivals, and large community celebrations that highlight this momentous event while also sharing African American culture and heritage.

This program will be presented by the African American Museum of Iowa.
2022-04-05 19:30:00 -05006/14/226:30 p.m.Hiawatha Public LibraryHiawatha -

Cedar Amateur Astronomers present Solar Saturday, July 9, 2022

Learn more about our nearest star – the Sun - as Cedar Amateur Astronomers and our own Mr. Carl Bracken present a Solar Saturday event entitled "The Sun and Earth Connections" from 3-6 PM on Saturday July 9, 2022. Mr. Bracken will present some of the recent research which involves the interconnection between the Sun and the Earth and the wide range of global impacts driven by the Sun. In the current phase of solar cycle 25, we are seeing an increase in sun spots, flares, prominence, and coronal mass ejections. Mr. Bracken will provide video of these events and explain how and why they occur and describe what this means to us.

Weather permitting, stick around following the presentation for the rare opportunity to safely view the Sun, as CAA members will be operating several telescopes equipped with approved solar viewing filters. Remember, NEVER look at the Sun without the proper filters! Only specially equipped optical aids can be used to safely observe the sun.

CAA members will also be giving tours of the facility and will be available to answer questions as you browse the exhibits and displays. Abstract Ideas: Abstract Art from the Collection

Culled from CRMA’s collection of works created after 1950, Abstract Ideas explores the potential of abstraction in the hands of post-World War II artists. In some cases, the subject matter has been only slightly abstracted, diverging only a little from the way they appear in nature. In other cases, artists have moved completely away from any recognizable object in pursuit of more emotional or intellectual goals. In all cases, however, artists maintained their relationship to and dialogue with the fundamental properties of art such as balance, form, line, color, and rhythm. Investigating the various degrees of abstraction found in modern paintings and sculpture, this exhibition presents a diverse group of works, each of which operates on different emotional and intellectual levels.
2022-08-09 16:00:00 -05008/09/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -
Cedar Amateur Astronomers May 21 Public Night

Learn more about our early universe as Cedar Amateur Astronomers will host University of Iowa Professor Hai Fu for a public event at 8:30 p.m. on May 21, 2022 at the Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Center.

Every discovery has an untold story. During this CAA public night, Mr. Fu will share with you the story behind the Iowan discovery of the massive cool gas stream that is providing the fuel for star formation to a massive galaxy 11 billion years ago. Here is a nice description of the study from the VICE News article (https://tinyurl.com/gama0913): If you peer into the deep reaches of time and space to glimpse the universe when it was just a few billion years old, you’ll see an ancient era populated by many massive galaxies. Simulations suggest these galactic behemoths must have been fed by cold gas in dark matter filaments—structures that make up the cosmic web that connects galaxies in the universe—but the nature of these gas infusions has remained murky in the absence of direct observations. This system is by far the best evidence for the elusive cosmic filaments that supercharge ancient galaxies with cold gas.

Weather permitting, after the presentation club volunteers will be operating several large telescopes to view the wonderful Iowa skies. Come early or stay late to visit astronomy displays and exhibits. All ages. Cost is free. This event is in person and on Zoom. Mauricio Lasansky: Master Printmaker

The Museum is fortunate to be able to dedicate four galleries to the work of consummate printmaker, Mauricio Lasansky. Making prints for more than 65 years--first in his native Argentina, then in New York City, and for more than 55 years in Iowa City, Iowa--Lasansky's generous gift of prints in the 1980s and 1990s made it possible for the Museum to present a wide range of the artist's works, changing all four galleries every six months. Best known for large-scale prints in which he uses multiple plates and full ranges of color, Lasansky combines a spectrum of graphic techniques including etching, drypoint, aquatint, and engraving. Throughout his stylistic evolution, he created eloquent figural statements that are colorful, fresh, and spontaneous.
2022-05-22 16:00:00 -05005/22/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Iowa City Genealogical Society

The May 21st program of the Iowa City Genealogical Society will be presented by Joel and Cathy Helman. Cathy’s great-great grandfather was Joel Garretson, an Underground Railroad “conductor” who assisted fugitive slaves advance from the home of Henderson and Elizabeth Lewelling in Salem, Henry County, Iowa to the next “safe house” during their escape northward to Canada. The National Park Service includes the Lewelling home as an important site in the nation’s “Network to Freedom.” Lewelling, Garretson and their Quaker neighbors were strong willed abolitionists during the pioneer days of Iowa and the period leading to the Civil War. Dave and Cathy will also trace the ancestry of Garretson, Lewelling and Edwin Coppock, a co-conspirator with abolitionist John Brown.

The meeting will begin at 9:30 at the LDS Family History Library, 2730 Bradford Drive, Iowa City.
