Cedar Amateur Astronomers Public Night August 20, 2022

Learn more about our universe as Cedar Amateur Astronomers will host Professor Brent Studer for a public event entitled "The First Stars" at 8 p.m. on August 20, 2022, at the Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning Center. Weather permitting, after the presentation club volunteers will be operating several large telescopes to view the wonderful Iowa skies. Come early or stay late to visit astronomy displays and exhibits. All ages. Cost is free. This event is in person and on Zoom. Go to cedar-astronomers.org/events for more information.

Carl Sagan once said, “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the Universe.” Indeed, nearly every chemical element found in all the ingredients needed to make that pie are the product of an eons-long chain of events set in place by stars as they evolve. However, at the beginning of cosmic time there were no stars. Understanding when and how those first stars formed, and how they influenced the formation of the first galaxies is not well understood. Astronomers have hypotheses and models and now the James Webb Space Telescope, which is uniquely designed to help answer questions about the evolution of the early universe and perhaps even those first stars. On August 20th, we’ll talk about what those first stars might have been like and what answers JWST and the newest generation of tools might provide about this mysterious time in the universe’s evolution.
8/20/228:00 p.m.Eastern Iowa Observatory and Learning CenterEly -

Abstract Ideas: Abstract Art from the Collection

Culled from CRMA’s collection of works created after 1950, Abstract Ideas explores the potential of abstraction in the hands of post-World War II artists. In some cases, the subject matter has been only slightly abstracted, diverging only a little from the way they appear in nature. In other cases, artists have moved completely away from any recognizable object in pursuit of more emotional or intellectual goals. In all cases, however, artists maintained their relationship to and dialogue with the fundamental properties of art such as balance, form, line, color, and rhythm. Investigating the various degrees of abstraction found in modern paintings and sculpture, this exhibition presents a diverse group of works, each of which operates on different emotional and intellectual levels.
2022-08-25 20:00:00 -05008/25/2212:00 p.m.Cedar Rapids Museum of ArtCedar Rapids -

Warbirds Over Iowa

Warbirds Over Iowa is an event that brings large radio controlled scale military aircraft from Iowa and surrounding States to Cedar Rapids. Aircraft types include Biplanes, Jets, Fighters, and Bombers that have exceptional scale detail and can drop simulated “bombs” in the interest of realism as they compete for awards like Best Flight, Best Scale Appearance, and Pilot's Choice. The event is a draw to pilots in surrounding states and also a fund raiser for Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. Donations will be taken for the organization that allows veterans to fly to Washington to visit their memorials. Honor flight will be on site to provide information to veterans who would like to participate in a future Honor Flight. It’s free admission for spectators, so come see the aircraft fly.
2022-08-04 16:00:00 -05008/27/2210:00 a.m.Skyhawks FieldMarion
