Early Stage Dementia Support Group

Early Stage Support Groups benefit persons living with dementia by providing a platform to build a network of others sharing a similar experience; offer ways to solve common problems; talk through challenges and suggest ways to cope; create a safe space to share feelings, needs, and concerns; and learn about local resources. To determine whether a person living with dementia is fit for the group, a screening is required. This ensures the group meets the needs of its members. In order to participate in the group, each member must: have a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia, have mild memory loss or other mild symptoms due to dementia, acknowledge their diagnosis and related symptoms, be willing to participate in group discussions, be able to communicate their symptoms and experience, and have no other serious medical conditions or mental illness that could put anyone at risk. Group members and care partners must also recognize that membership in the group is temporary, as all persons with dementia will progress beyond the ability to participate. This group will meet monthly on the third Tuesday at 10:00 am beginning March 16, 2021, and it will run for six months. After six months, all members will be rescreened. Those still fit will be invited back to the group, while those who have progressed, and their caregivers, will be transitioned to more appropriate resources. New members will be accepted until May 2021. Anyone interested in joining or learning more about the group can reach out to Acacia Deadrick at (712) 454-5035 or aadeadrick@alz.org.
2021-02-23 11:30:00 -06003/16/2110:00 a.m.Alzheimer's AssociationCedar Rapids -

Holistic Healing for Educators & Classrooms with Prairiewoods, Credit 1

Have the stressors of teaching, the pandemic, hybrid-learning, and daily life affected your personal happiness and well-being? Have you experienced difficulty finding time to engage in self-care activities that may help? In this one-hour credit course via Zoom, learn “microinterventions” to use daily to reset your brain and empower you to fully show up with a compassionate heart toward yourself, your students, your family and the world. Through practices of mindfulness, self-compassion and neuroscience, begin to restore holistic healing and build resiliency, joy, optimism and curiosity, leading to health and well-being. This online course with Prairiewoods is facilitated by Kim Seward, RN, BSN, CMI, and Ann Jackson, PBVM. It provides educators and any school or university staff with research-based theory, collaborative design and opportunities to practice. A text, Practicing Presence, is included in the registration fee. This first credit hour will be followed by credits 2 and 3 in the summer and fall of 2021. Credit 2 (June 23–25) will offer practices of mindfulness, self-compassion and neuroscience to develop a personal classroom toolkit for use with students. Deepening your own mindfulness and self-compassion skills will also be explored. Credit 3 (fall 2021) will invite collaboration to review outcomes, provide feedback and cite next steps. The cost is $35 per credit hour, paid to Grant Wood Area Education Agency. (Due to a generous donation by the Sisters of the Presentation, Dubuque, all additional costs will be covered!) Blakelock: By the Light of the Moon Art Exhibit

Forgeries, mental illness, intrigue, and rapid fame—the dramatic circumstances of Ralph Albert Blakelock’s life often overshadow the merits of his work. By the Light of the Moon will feature eight exceptional artworks by Blakelock from the museum collection. Born in 1847, his early paintings were highly detailed landscapes inspired by Hudson River School painters. After traveling to the American West and becoming familiar with Barbizon painters, Blakelock developed the atmospheric landscapes for which he is known. Drenched in darkness and silvery moonlight, his thickly painted landscapes have a distinctive otherworldly quality. This exhibition will explore Blakelock’s body of work and how his interest in spiritualism is reflected in his artistic practice.
2021-02-24 17:00:00 -06002/24/2110:00 a.m.Figge Art MuseumDavenport -
