UI Theatre presents I'm Writing to You Today
<p><strong>BORDERLESS<br><em>I'm Writing to You Today</em><br> Created by Ann Kreitman<br>April 1-30, 2021</strong></p><p><em>I'm Writing to You Today</em> is an environmental audio experience that will lead you through campus in the footsteps of our queer ancestors. Listeners will be able to go alone or in pairs to reimagine campus as the backdrop for historical queer love letters. This outdoor experience will begin at the University of Iowa Theatre Building (200 N. Riverside Drive, Iowa City, Iowa) and will last approximately one hour. Available for digital download on Spotify and Apple Podcasts beginning April 1.</p><p><em>I'm Writing to You Today</em> is a gift to the LGBTQ+ community of Iowa, celebrating the fact that we always have and always will find our path to love.</p><p>This experience was created in collaboration with the <a href="https://multicultural.uiowa.edu/culturalcenters/pridehouse/">Pride Alliance Center</a> and is part of the <a href="https://theatre.uiowa.edu/production/borderless" target="_blank">Borderless</a> series.</p><p>Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa sponsored events. Americans in Paris: Grant Wood and Marvin Cone's 1920 Trip to Paris
<p>For three months in the summer of 1920, Grant Wood and his best friend Marvin Cone traveled to Paris to see great art, soak up the sights, and to paint. This brief sojourn proved to be pivotal for both artists, enhancing their nascent interest in Impressionism and painting en plein air. While each artist discontinued painting in this style beyond the early 1930s, this trip to Paris (Wood’s first trip abroad, Cone’s second) was critical to their development. What the artists did, saw, and painted is carefully outlined in Cone’s meticulous and well-written diary of the trip, including where the artists painted on which days. As such, this diary enables the ability to date certain works to the precise date of creation. Seriously Funny: American Gothic Parodies
<p>Grant Wood’s American Gothic is probably the world’s most parodied American painting, second only to Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. The fact that thousands of parodies of American Gothic exist, dating back several decades, speaks to the enduring inspiration of one of America’s greatest works of art. This exhibition—a first for the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art—will look at many of these parodies—some in the flesh on the gallery’s walls and many others digitally projected in an attempt to share the incredible reach of this iconic painting. From Bill and Hillary Clinton to Leonardo and Mona Lisa to RuPaul as male and female, these parodies speak to how this one painting serves as the basis for looking at various contemporary people and issues. This show celebrates the roots of Elvis, yet is a fast-paced concert that makes it difficult for you to stay in your seat. It caters to both the young and the young at heart. He's got the look, the voice, the charm and the moves that take us back to a time when parents were flabbergasted by the flauntingly provocative hip action.</p><p>In Hall's Elvis Rock N Remember show, he achieves a powerful flashback experience to the moment when fans fell in love with the talented, handsome, carefree, energetic, high-spirited young man that is Elvis Presley. The show is masterfully produced with a mixture of Elvis hits from rock n roll, country, pop to gospel, multiple costume changes and a heartfelt tribute to our veterans. He's even got the teddy bears and scarves to woo the ladies. A must-see for all ages!</p><p>Joseph Hall, born in 1984, has been paying tribute to the legacy of Elvis Presley since 2006. He starred on NBC's America's Got Talent in 2008, making 6 TV appearances, viewed by more than 90 million people and placing as one of the top 10 finalists! Sharon Osbourne impressed enough to tell him, "I've got shoes older than you, but I'd like to try you on!" Also, Piers Morgan quoted saying, "ELVIS IS BACK!" Joseph Hall has performed all over the world! Joseph Hall has won accolades throughout his young career including the "Spirit of Elvis " award. Joseph Hall has worked with Elvis Presley Enterprises, Legends in Concert, and has officially been recognized as one of the top tribute artists in the world today. Grant Wood Revealed: Rarely Seen Works by an American Master
<p>Launching the CRMA's year-long celebration of the 175th anniversary of Iowa's statehood will be an unusual look at Iowa’s most famous artist, Grant Wood. While known for his iconic American Gothic (Art Institute of Chicago) and other Regionalist works from his mature style, Grant Wood was constantly exploring styles, techniques, and media. This exhibition will bring together works from both the CRMA collection as well as from private collections to celebrate Wood’s inquisitive mind.
