On March 17, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a statewide public health disaster emergency in response to the state's coronavirus outbreak. The proclamation includes the restriction of in-person gatherings of 10 or more people along with the temporary closing of several businesses in the arts, culture and entertainment sector.

Most of the public gatherings listed on the Hoopla calendar are canceled or postponed through the end of April. Please check with event organizers to confirm the status of events you see listed.

A virtual option has been created to post and search for those events and programs that are offering an online gathering opportunity for our Hoopla readers. Enjoy!

Event Description

Mindfulness is the power of mind to be deeply aware of what's happening—without commentary or interference. Research reveals numerous benefits to the nervous system, emotions and general sense of well-being. In the eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha), we will cultivate the skill of mindfulness through formal meditation practices and informal integrative practices. Facilitator Chris Klug, a grief counselor and mindfulness teacher, has been an instructor in the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics since 2001. This series is co-sponsored by Prairiewoods and Cedar Memorial. It consists of a two-and-a-half-hour class each week for eight weeks (Tuesday evenings from March 24–May 12) and one extended six-and-a-half-hour Saturday class (April 25). If you want to participate in this eight-week series, please attend one of the information sessions (March 3 or 10). The information sessions are free, but the eight-week series costs $400. (Partial scholarships are available through Cedar Memorial.) For more information or to register for an information session, contact Prairiewoods at www.Prairiewoods.org or 319-395-6700.
