Event Description

Shining Light on the Broken Bits

We’ll be brief here. We named ourselves Society of Broken Souls because we know what it’s like to feel a little (or sometimes a lot) broken — and if we’re all being honest, we’d hazard a guess that you do too. But it’s the going it alone that makes it harder than it needs to be so we created this Society. We’ll write and sing songs that’ll let you know you’re not alone. That we’re all in this together. Through the fire. Through the dark. And sometimes, dare we say, into the light. To borrow a line from Townes Van Zandt, “There ain’t no dark till something shines …” So if that steady stream of shiny highlight reels bombarding you makes you feel like your own movies look a little tarnished and rusty, fret not. Join us. We’ve got your back.

Society of Broken Souls is the Folk Noir duo of songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Dennis James and Lauryn Shapter. From stripped down, bare-bones acoustic arrangements to a denser and edgier electric sound, their songs confront our shared, raw humanity all while celebrating the beautiful mosaic of the human experience.
