Event Description

The Monarch Research Project and Linn Conservation will dedicate the Orlan Love Prairie at Squaw Creek Park in Marion on Tuesday, June 25, at 4 pm.

The 6.6-acre prairie was planted in 2017 and honors Orlan Love, a Gazette reporter and columnist for 24 years. A lifelong resident of Quasqueton on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River, Love often writes of the benefits of communing with nature and of the need to appreciate and preserve Iowa’s natural heritage.

The Orlan Love Prairie is one of five prairies planted at Squaw Creek Park in the last two years. Linn County Conservation employees have installed a total of 57 acres of prairie as part of the 1,000 Acre Plan, an program of the Monarch Research Project to return native habitat to parks and other public lands in Linn County. The Orlan Love Prairie is the park’s most prominent and is located near Red Cedar Lodge.
