Boland Dowdall Plus One features flutist Jan Boland, guitarist John Dowdall and pan flutist Rodney Garnett performing a concert of world music for flutes and guitar in Daehler-Kitchen Auditorium located in Marquis Hall on the Coe College campus at 1220 1st Ave. NE in Cedar Rapids, IA at 7 p.m. on Friday November 1, 2019. The concert will feature music from Moldova and Peru where the pan flute, a series of varying length reed or wooden tubes activated by blowing down into the open holes, is a common and prominent instrument. Garnett learned to play the pan flute while studying aural music traditions and culture in Moldova, situated between Ukraine and Romania, on a Fullbright scholarship. Moldovan traditional music reminds western audiences of the pathos and joy of Jewish and Gypsy music traditions, and has a reputation for virtuosity that moves audiences to both dancing and to tears. Boland and Garnett will also play modern western and 19th-c. wooden flutes with music ranging from the baroque Scottish composer James Oswald to special arrangements for Boland Dowdall Plus One by Moldovan composer Igor Iachimciuc.
Boland, Dowdall & Garnett just returned from working on this program during an intensive 2-week chamber music residency in New Hampshire, where they first launched their collaboration with a weeklong residency in 2018. Garnett is professor emeritus at the University of Wyoming, and has worked extensively in orchestras, jazz and chamber music ensembles, folk music ensembles, and recording studios.
