Opening Reception: A Line Goes for a Walk with Priscilla Steele
- 5 - 7 p.m.
- All Ages
Gilded Pear Gallery is pleased to present a line goes for a walk, a solo exhibit of works by Priscilla Steele.
A playful observation was made by the twentieth century artist, Paul Klee: A drawing is simply a line going for a walk. This wisdom resonated with Priscilla in the development of her works and marries her various subject matter in drawing, collage and etchings. “Over a more than forty year career, the variability of line has been central to my exploration,” says Steele about this exhibit. “It was an unwitting, intuitive choice that led me to focus on the figure and botanic subjects. Pivoting between their contrasting qualities, I refresh my perceptions. In this way, extravagant, blossoming petals exist in a calculated tension side-by-side with emotionally charged images of the figure.” The show features works from very large-scale, highly detailed renderings, to very small, simple line drawings of budding flowers. The deliberate pentimenti in her etchings allude similar textures to the ripped collage elements composed in the mixed media drawings.
Priscilla was raised in New Jersey, just outside of New York City. She studied at a small liberal arts college, Saint Lawrence University in northern New York, and four years later spent a productive academic year in Europe where she developed a strong interest in drawing and printmaking. Priscilla moved to the area to complete her graduate work in printmaking at the University of Iowa and stayed to teach at Coe College and eventually open Campbell Steele Gallery. She has since retired and closed the gallery in Marion and continues her journey as a working artist in Omaha, NE. She has a strong regional exhibition history and co-founded the Marion Arts Festival in addition to serving on several art boards and committees in the Cedar Rapids area.
