Travels with Jackson started with the idea of responding to Steve Erickson’s travels with Jackson Pollock’s Mural. He became impressed over time with the painting’s ability to never quite fall into a single, clear reading. For Erickson, the most interesting artworks (in history) are often those that remain elusive. The artist seems irrelevant and often the subject is uncertain. These works can evoke anything or everything but are never truly about one thing. Rather than convey specific messages or meanings, they encourage a state of active looking and contemplation. They draw the viewer into a deeper, universal reality. The effect, at its best, is to wash one’s eyes of assumptions about the world and leave one seeing at things a little differently.
Steve Erickson has served as the Manager of Design and Installation for the Stanley Museum of Art since 2006. He has been traveling with and installing Jackson Pollock’s Mural during its ongoing world tour. Erickson lives and works in Iowa City. He received his BA from Saint Olaf College in 1984 and an MFA in painting from the University of Iowa in 1993. Erickson’s artwork has been exhibited widely over the last 35 years and is held in many public and private collections. His upcoming exhibition at the Figge Museum of Art in Davenport opens September 14th and will be on view through January.
First Fridays are free and open to the public with complimentary popcorn and a cash bar.
