On March 17, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a statewide public health disaster emergency in response to the state's coronavirus outbreak. The proclamation includes the restriction of in-person gatherings of 10 or more people along with the temporary closing of several businesses in the arts, culture and entertainment sector.

Most of the public gatherings listed on the Hoopla calendar are canceled or postponed through the end of April. Please check with event organizers to confirm the status of events you see listed.

Event Description

Sourdough is known for its characteristic flavor ranging from mild to strong, chewy texture, and crisp crust. Compared to standard loaves, sourdough is easier to digest due to the naturally occurring acids and long fermentation time. This series will cover all the basics of how to bake delicious artisanal sourdough bread in your own home. We will start with the baking process and, working backwards through the process, we will add in a new element each class: baking, shaping, mixing and rising, and fermentation. Not only will you learn the process of making sourdough, but also the science behind what makes sourdough an artisanal treat. Classes include: Artisan Bread Basics: The Baking Process, Artisan Bread Basics: Professional Shaping, Artisan Bread Basics: Mixing and Rising, and Artisan Bread Basics: Fermentation and Starters.
