Event Description

NAMI Family-to-Family, a free 12-week educational course developed by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and designed to help family members of adults living with mental illness, will be offered by NAMI Linn County in two locations beginning in January. Delivered by trained facilitators who offer lived experience, its evidence-based curriculum includes the following:

-- Up-to-date information on illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders, and other mental health conditions and how they affect the brain

  • -- Current treatments, including evidence-based therapies, medications, and side effects

  • -- How to manage crises, solve problems, and communicate effectively

  • -- How to develop the confidence and stamina to provide support with compassion

Course materials, discussions, and exercises examine the biological origins of mental illness and help family members separate the illness from the individual.

Classes will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Jan. 7 at the Ecumenical Community Center, 601 Second Ave. SE, and at 6 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Jan. 8 at the Marion Public Library, 1095 Sixth Ave., Marion.

Advance registration, by Dec. 31, strongly encouraged, to enable obtaining the free class materials. To enroll, email or phone 319-221-1184. State which night/location you would prefer, and provide attendees’ name, email address, and phone number.
