On March 17, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a statewide public health disaster emergency in response to the state's coronavirus outbreak. The proclamation includes the restriction of in-person gatherings of 10 or more people along with the temporary closing of several businesses in the arts, culture and entertainment sector.

Most of the public gatherings listed on the Hoopla calendar are canceled or postponed through the end of April. Please check with event organizers to confirm the status of events you see listed.

A virtual option has been created to post and search for those events and programs that are offering an online gathering opportunity for our Hoopla readers. Enjoy!

Event Description

When you register for the 4th Annual Hunger Banquet, you aren’t signing up to attend “just another fundraiser.” The Hunger Banquet is designed to immerse guests in the reality of food insecurity in our community. Based on the income levels in Johnson County, some guests will receive a chicken dinner, a lucky few will receive a steak and lobster dinner, and far more will receive no meal at all.

Feeding America estimates that more than 19,000 Johnson County residents experience food insecurity. Last year, CommUnity Food Bank distributed a record-breaking 2,000,000 pounds of food to 4,583 households.

The annual Hunger Banquet is the largest fundraiser for the Food Bank, providing enough funding to support the food bank for nearly 6 months.
